Sturgill Simpson’s Theater Tour is Selling Out Quickly
Get ’em while the getting’s good because they’re about to be gone.
That’s not a sales pitch, that’s the simple reality of Sturgill Simpson’s upcoming tour starting on 1/29 in Knoxville that will go virtually nonstop into June, and end with a special appearance at the legendary Red Rocks amphitheater with The Avett Brothers in July. In between Simpson will be hitting many of the year’s big festivals, including Bonnaroo, Stagecoach, Coachella, The New Orleans Jazz Festival, and The Governor’s Ball in New York, but a lot of the non festival dates, especially early in the tour, have already sold out.
After going on a sold out club tour in the latter half of 2014, Sturgill’s next stint on the road sees him graduating to bigger clubs and many theaters to house the growing demand. But even with more capacity, many dates are selling out almost immediately, while other shows are being moved to bigger venues. The Sturgill show on 2/5 at The Magic Stick in Detroit was forced to move to the larger Majestic Theater on the same property, and the show in Grand Rapids the night before was also forced to move to a bigger room. The show on 2/22 in Charlottesville, Virginia moved from The Southern to the higher capacity Jefferson Theater because of high demand, meanwhile 17 other shows are completely sold out already.
UPDATE: Due to overwhelming demand, Stubbs in Austin has added a second date on 4/5. Tickets will go on sale on 1/30 at 10AM.
Original tickets for the tour were priced around $14.00 to $20.00, but have shot up dramatically on the secondary market for sold out shows, some going for over $200.00 according to StubHub. Want to get into the sold out Saturday show at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville on February 28th? The only available tickets are going for $253.55. Tickets for the Sunday show of the two night stint are going for around $188.00. Tickets for the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, NC are going for $153.00 on the secondary market, and these numbers could go up as the shows get closer. Just the first round of testing out Sturgill at the theater level, and he’s already proving even bigger venues are needed to meet demand.

Opening many dates on the first leg of the tour is songwriter Anderson East. Many of the Western dates will be opened by DJ’s from Electric Western. Saving Country Music checked with all the venues to find out the status of tickets and you can find that information below.

Okay. I’ll go first.
Waaaaahhhhhhhh! You’re talking about Sturgill again. sniff sniff Waaaahhhhhh!
Okay, now that THAT’s out of the way! 😀
January 25, 2015 @ 5:50 pm
I know you’re kidding obviously, but I really am getting tired of writing Sturgill Simpson articles. Nonetheless, this is totally newsworthy that he’s going on his first theater tour with a much greater venue capacity and still shows are selling out left and right. I’ve really never seen anything like this from an artist with such humble beginnings and no radio play. This is crazy.
January 25, 2015 @ 8:29 pm
talk about Dave Cobb. did you hear the sneak peek on Lindi Ortega’s instagram? dude is King Midas right now…
January 25, 2015 @ 9:26 pm
I did. The song is sick. That album can’t be released soon enough.
January 25, 2015 @ 8:42 pm
Do you think Atlantic could re-release Metamodernsounds in the next couple months? If so, could that trigger a CMA nomination for AOY? I know it was released outside the CMA calendar, but not by much. The CMAs have to be somewhat embarrassed by missing this one. If they can keep renominating the same artists for New Artist of the Year, why not try to find a loophole for this album?
January 25, 2015 @ 9:30 pm
I don’t know the ins and outs of Sturgill’s deal with Thirty Tigers, but I believe he retained the rights to all of his music, which means hypothetically he could re-release anything with another label. At this point “Metamodern Sounds” is selling so well, I’m not sure why he would. But as far as being eligible for CMA, I don’t see that happening at all. I think with his next release, I think there’s a serious chance for some mainstream country nomination, if only New Artist of the Year, but we’ll have to see. All this success is great, but his next album is going to be crucial.
January 28, 2015 @ 3:07 pm
Yep, this is crazy. I suppose we might be tired of reading about Sturgill, but what can you do, this is news. I don’t see any Florida’s date.
January 26, 2015 @ 12:36 pm
You forgot to add that this just proves he is a sell-out with no talent who just copies Waylon. 🙂
January 26, 2015 @ 6:55 pm
Dick……
January 26, 2015 @ 7:11 pm
Someone missed the joke…
January 27, 2015 @ 8:36 am
Cause Im old and grumpy…..my apology’s if it was a joke .
January 27, 2015 @ 1:29 pm
No problem – it is easy to misread sarcasm in comments like this. It is all good.
I was just following up Sam’s “typical ” comment with another. Once an independent artist begins to become popular, there is always someone who thinks they have sold out and/or decides they were never that good in the first place.
In fact, if we are honest, I think most of us around here have a certain smugness at our superior musical tastes. Dismissing artists once they become popular is one example.
January 28, 2015 @ 3:09 pm
There is a small measure of truth to this statement.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:35 pm
I’ll be seeing him February 20th at the Paradise. Saw him open for ZBB at Meadowbrook last year. Can’t wait.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:41 pm
i got mine for Buck Owens Crystal Palace in April!! ($20)
January 26, 2015 @ 6:42 pm
we got killer seats for the same show at the Palace. a great place to see bands….. and five minutes from the casa……
January 25, 2015 @ 5:41 pm
If anybody has tickets to the Austin show laying around..I will take them off your hands.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:42 pm
It’s almost unimaginable, but I’ve yet to see Simpson in concert. He blew through here (Pittsburgh) as an opener for ZBB and I elected to wait to see him as a headliner. Thinking I should get in the car and go to Detroit or D.C.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:43 pm
Less than a year ago on my birthday, May 8th, I told my buddy we better shoot to Nashville to catch the free show at the Station Inn because that would be most likely the last time we could see Sturgill before he blows up. Sure enough it was. I have a handwritten setlist from that evening signed “Happy birthday brother, Sturgill Simpson.” I’d seen him twice before that. The good old days are over but he is so deserving of his meteoric rise.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:44 pm
Where I’m at, craigslist is full of ads looking for tickets to his sold out show. I had no idea he was even coming until it was too late. There are literally no tickets to be found anywhere. Meanwhile Florida Georgia line ain’t even close to selling out.
January 25, 2015 @ 5:48 pm
I already got tix to see him at both his NY dates and the Boston dates..thank god I bought them awhile back.
January 25, 2015 @ 6:07 pm
I really hope he’s at Summerfest in Milwaukee this year. He’s playing all the other major music festivals and he’s free between Delaware and Colorado.
January 25, 2015 @ 6:10 pm
This great! I am planning to buy tickets and give them to friends with NO explanation, “Just go and thank me later.”
Thankfully my area has ample venues so he got a few dates that aren’t too far away. But this proves again there is a HUGE market of people are hungry for authentic music devoid of the hands of big record companies and their over-production.
In fall of 2014 Mary Chapin Carpenter sold out three nights in a row near me and I don’t live in a very country music minded area but people know good music when they hear it and will pay for it.
January 25, 2015 @ 6:10 pm
It’s official. He’s a sellout.
Selling out every venue he plays. Good for him.
January 25, 2015 @ 6:11 pm
Proud to be at fault on this one..2/13 Washington D.C. here I come!!!!
January 25, 2015 @ 6:17 pm
Got tickets to the Austin show. It sold out in around 20 minutes. I logged in 15 minutes after they went on sale and no tickets were available. I kept hitting refresh and luckily one came up that someone had released out of there cart for whatever reason. I was about to be pissed if I didn’t get a ticket.
January 25, 2015 @ 6:36 pm
Any idea when he might make his way to western Canada?
January 25, 2015 @ 6:52 pm
Grand Rapids represent!
January 25, 2015 @ 6:56 pm
The show in Philly is sold out as of Friday. I have a ticket, but unsure if I’m gonna be able to make it. It’d be a shame to miss.
January 25, 2015 @ 7:17 pm
The DC show at the 9:30 Club (capacity 1,200) sold out early last month, or about 2 months ahead of the show date. About a week and half before that, Jason Isbell is playing down the street at the Lincoln Theater, which has a similar capacity. That one sold out 4 months in advance. I snoozed on that one and so didn’t get a ticket. I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake with Sturgill, so I got a ticket early. I was able to get a ticket to see Isbell at the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville on 2/2, which is about 2 hours away.
January 25, 2015 @ 7:33 pm
I am also going to see Sturgill in DC and missed out on the Lincoln Theater date so I’m going to Columbia, SC in April to see Jason Isbell. As much as I hate to give this information up Jason Eady is playing for free at Hill Country Barbecue in March.
January 25, 2015 @ 7:58 pm
For those who are not familiar with Hill Country BBQ, the night that Jason Eady is playing is a Monday. That means that they have all you can eat bbq for like $25. Between Jason Eady, copious amounts of bbq, and the fact that they have Shiner Premium on tap, I’m not going to miss this.
January 26, 2015 @ 7:47 am
Ohhh please don’t give out that information haha!!!!! After I bought Sturgill tickets I looked for Eady tickets and I saw the free Jason Eady show, count me in!!! Looks like I’ll have to get there earlier than planned though 🙂
Zack- good to know about the all you can eat BBQ!!! It says you can call ahead to reserve a table up close, how does that work? This will be my first time going there.
January 26, 2015 @ 8:54 am
I didn’t realize you could reserve there for general admission shows, although I don’t know that it’s really needed. There does appear to be a number you can call for that.
It’s a pretty cozy room downstairs from the restaurant. There are a few 8 seat or so tables along the wall to the left and right of the stage. It is open in the middle with about 4 barrels for holding drinks. You can stand right in front of the stage. If it’s crowded, I would think you wouldn’t be able to see much if you’re seated, as the stage is maybe a foot high.
Just checked their schedule and it appears that Karen Jonas will be headlining there on 2/3 and 2/10! I wonder if that will become a regular gig for her as Fredericksburg in only about 60 miles away.
Other shows of interest coming up there:
Whtey Morgan and the 78s – 3/31 (Tickets $12 – $15)
Sarah Gayle Meech – 5/2 (No Cover)
Ray Wylie Hubbard – 5/31 (Tickets $22 – $35)
January 26, 2015 @ 10:21 am
I promise I haven’t shared that info with anyone else! I almost deleted that portion of my post but I guess we can’t have it both ways…either we keep it to ourselves and conveniently get to see an artist that know one ever finds out about or we share our enthusiasm and help the artist achieve more of what they are working toward.
Maybe there will be some converts that night who will be moved to look for country music that is not mainstream.
January 28, 2015 @ 6:33 am
Oh GOD…how did I miss the Jason Eady show? I’m definitely down for some Karen Jonas and Q…Hill Country is the only place I can find that has Shiner Black. Also – American Aquarium is playing the Hamilton on Feb. 4th.
January 28, 2015 @ 7:28 am
I’m guessing you’ll be OK. They probably made it a no cover show for a reason (e.g., they may think not too many in the area know about him). I saw a free Possessed by Paul James show a week ago Friday. Now that was a unique concert experience!. He’s gotten a lot of NPR love, which matters in DC. There was a good crowd there, but it wasn’t packed to the gills. As It was a Friday, there were a a good number of people just out for a night on the town and just hanging out chatting in the back while he played. There might have been 50 or so people that were really into what he was doing.
Speaking of the Hamilton, I saw Billy Joe Shaver (first time for me) there in July. What a privilege that was. He’ll be at the Birchmere in June. Not to be missed.
January 25, 2015 @ 9:39 pm
In November of 2013, I Sturgill played at Hill Country for free and there were less than 50 people there, most of whom just went because they liked going to Hill Country.
I was surprised to see him headline at 9 30, and didn’t bother to get a ticket until its too late. Glad to see him succeed, but…
January 25, 2015 @ 10:40 pm
I was at that Hill Country concert, it was incredible. I miss the days when you could show up and stand front row and then meet him after…
January 26, 2015 @ 7:03 am
I was at that show, too. I got the impression that there were only a few of us there who knew who he was beforehand. It was the 18th, I believe, which would have made it a Monday. So yeah, a small crowd of people mainly there to hang at HillCountry and maybe hear some live music.
January 26, 2015 @ 9:24 am
Great to see some DC folks on here! I was lucky enough to get a Sturgill ticket when they first went on sale. I was totally pissed about the Isbell show, it was the only show that was sold out on his tour dates (or at least last time i checked! I even went as far to email his manager Traci Thomas directly to see if could possibly snag a ticket from her. She was very polite and said she didn’t have any held for that show. She said to contact Lincoln Theater direct the day of as sometimes they have a few leftovers… fingers crossed.
January 26, 2015 @ 9:51 am
I was shocked that the show sold out that far in advance. I didn’t jump on it right away because I thought I had some time. He did sell out the 9:30 club last January, but that one sold out a maybe few weeks before the show and he had a strong opener in Holly Williams. And boy, that was a tremendous show. You wouldn’t know that, though, if you read Chris Richards’ review of it in the Washington Post He damned him with faint praise by calling him “undislikable.” Hipster. I’m still pissed.
January 26, 2015 @ 10:44 am
Ha ha, that review pissed me off too, and I wasn’t even at the show! As I recall, the writer took what was ostensibly a concert review and turned into an essay on his theory about “undislikable” music, or whatever. Frustrating.
January 26, 2015 @ 11:48 am
Oh, that is exactly right. Since then, he has written glowing articles on both Sturgill SImpson AND Sam Hunt. You know, because they’re both happening, as far as he’s concerned. But people like Jason Isbell and John Prine (who also got the label) are undislikable (in other words, milquetoast). Never mind songs like Elephant or Sam Stone.
February 3, 2015 @ 11:29 am
Saw the Jason Isbell show in Charlottesville last night. All I can say is that man and his band are on fire. Another great show. Really nice venue and enthusiastic crowd. Of the many highlights, two that stand out were him singing his heart out on Cover Me Up and a blistering version of We Ain’t Never Gonna Change. Strangest point was one dude who couldn’t seem to turn off fist pumping mode during Elephant, incuding yelling “Yeah! Seagrams!” on the “Seagrams in a coffe cup” line. Shhhhhhhhh!
He mentioned from the stage that he and the band were going into the studio in March and hoped to be back sometime in the summer to play the new songs. Checked his tour schedule and he has no dates between 2/17 and 4/16. So maybe a new album by eary summer?
Now it’s on to Sturgill at the 9:30 Club a week from Friday.
January 25, 2015 @ 7:54 pm
For those interested, I believe the Sunday night show in Nashville is going to be streamed live on Lightning 100 (good independent Nashville radio station). The station can be streamed online.
January 25, 2015 @ 8:24 pm
Not a single one in MS?
January 26, 2015 @ 6:44 am
…nor in GA~!?!
January 27, 2015 @ 8:22 am
His previous tour had 3 stops in Georgia – Atlanta, Augusta, and Macon.
January 25, 2015 @ 8:39 pm
I could not be happier for Sturgill with the success he’s having but this is the one part about artists becoming successful that sucks and that is the fact that it becomes virtually impossible to see them play live. I reckon that’s just the nature of the beast.
January 26, 2015 @ 9:16 am
Well the other option is nobody goes to the shows so he quits and you never get to see him again anyway.
January 25, 2015 @ 9:29 pm
Fayetteville, AR show sold out within a couple days. Your list can’t stay up to date with the ticket sales.
January 25, 2015 @ 9:49 pm
Go! Sturgill Go! Lord Yeah Son!
January 25, 2015 @ 10:18 pm
Man I hope you’re getting a piece of this S.S action for all the press here , Trigger .
I’m happy , at the very least , that people will have the chance to be exposed to a country/rootsy musical option they may otherwise not be aware of through the usual channels .
January 25, 2015 @ 11:36 pm
I still kick myself when I could have seen him and Billy Joe Shaver about 2 hours from where I am at and I didn’t go. Two of my favorites. I may just have to try to get to the Tulsa show…
January 26, 2015 @ 1:15 am
Good for him. He deserves it !
Glad I managed to see him in a small upstairs room doing a late night session in Perth, Scotland last summer.
January 26, 2015 @ 5:30 am
I’ve been seeing Sturgill’s mug all over the place lately, since he’s on the cover of the current issue of the Nashville Scene newsweekly. It’s kinda funny to walk into Kroger or the local library of whatever and see a rack full of magazines with Sturgill’s face on them.

January 26, 2015 @ 7:01 am
No Ohio dates. Which is very surprising with all of the number of venues and festivals. Has Sturgill not caught on in the Buckeye state yet and will his new deal push him into mainstream territory in the Buckeye state?
January 26, 2015 @ 9:45 am
Folks who are in locales not included on this tour should not be offended in any way. Why artists go where they go and how they route tours is a complicated logistical business, and rarely, if ever has to do with purposefully avoiding a certain area. Usually those areas eventually get dates too down the road, when other places more often frequented don’t. Unless you live in an isolated area (aka Southern Oregon, Montana, Dakota’s, etc.) I’m sure he’ll be making his way to a town near you soon enough.
January 26, 2015 @ 10:06 am
He was in Cincy last summer with ZBB, but I couldn’t make it. Drove to the Indy show in December and going to the Nashville show next month. There are a lot of great venues here in Columbus, hopefully he’ll swing by later in the year.
January 26, 2015 @ 2:47 pm
As a fellow Ohioan, I’m disappointed he doesn’t have any tour dates either. But I’m sure he’ll swing on through sometime soon (country music is pretty dang popular here in the Buckeye State).
I know he was at the Buckle Up Music Festival in Cincinnati last year, but sadly they cancelled this year’s festival. And it was a fantastic lineup too! I’m still kicking myself for not going. There could be a chance of the Nelsonville Music Festival picking him up, as they already have a great lineup announced so far and he would fit in perfectly.
January 26, 2015 @ 7:19 pm
I have heard from a tour manager for an indy artist that the best thing to do if you want the artist to come to your area is to email or call venues and promoters. Encourage them to invite the artist. That has more sway than trying to talk to the artists or his./her manager.
He is in Covington KY, this weekend not too far from SE Ohio folks like me, but I didn’t see the show in time. Bummed. I DO have Jason Isbell tickets in Columbus in two weeks, though, which will cheer me up.
January 26, 2015 @ 7:34 am
Tucson, Arizona April 25: Got my tickets! I will be there with bells on!!!
January 26, 2015 @ 7:37 am
Poor Sturgill!
This success must be making him feel even more insecure. He’s probably questioning whether he even wants to continue making music. Hopefully those long, wanking acoustic guitar solos that he loves doing live are therapeutic.
January 26, 2015 @ 8:43 am
Whenever I read anonymous comments like this about a musician achieving this kind of success without any help from the industry or radio it makes we wonder which bitter ex bandmate or sad pathetic jealous soul from their past posted it.
Troll on buddy..troll on
January 26, 2015 @ 9:08 am
My thought was that this is the kind of crap you typicaly see on Facebook.
January 26, 2015 @ 10:10 am
For the record, I love his music. I own both of his albums, and I’ve seen him twice live. I just think he’s hilariously pretentious.
January 26, 2015 @ 11:18 am
I won’t agree that Sturgill is pretentious, but I will agree that Sturgill has a curious personality, and following what he says can sometimes be like a roller coaster. But well-balanced individuals rarely makes great musicians. I don’t listen to music to be buddies with any artist. It’s always nice to see when an artist, especially one who’s blown up a little bit and whose time is incredibly valuable, spend that time with their fans and put an effort out to be nice and thoughtful, and be someone as a person you feel you can get behind. But to me, the music is always first. I see numerous artists out there whose music really just isn’t that good, but have built a fan base and following from being nice to everyone. I’ve also seen vice versa happen, where some of the greatest songwriters of our time struggle to fill venues because people think they’re rue or unlikeable. I don’t give a shit if someone is nice, pretentious, an asshole, or Man of the Year material. Is their music any good? That’s what I care about. If they’re good people, that’s a bonus.
The fact that Sturgill is so conflicted, and sees his name go on marquees all across the country and sell out almost immediately is a burden I’m not sure any of us can comprehend.
January 26, 2015 @ 7:47 pm
You call that thinking?
January 26, 2015 @ 10:42 am
Is this Jason Aldean?
January 26, 2015 @ 9:06 am
Saw Sturgill twice last year, in Atlanta & Charlotte, and had no problems getting tickets.
When tickets for his show at The Grey Eagle here in Asheville (capacity of 500) went on sale last November they sold out within a day. I can’t remember The Grey Eagle ever selling out a show 4 months in advance in the 14 years I’ve lived here. And they’ve always had good shows for such a small venue.
Homeskillet is a straight up phenom.
January 26, 2015 @ 10:02 am
I was lucky enough to snag 4 tickets to the Saturday show at 3rd and Lindsay show on Feb. 28th. Should be epic!
January 26, 2015 @ 11:50 am
He is playing in Asheville and the tix are sold out. DAMN!!! I wish the Handlebar was still open in Greenville. I was going to see him in Greenville, SC last year at a Festival, and his voice was giving him problems and he canceled the show. Really wanting to see him sometime. I am a HUGE FAN!!!
January 26, 2015 @ 3:06 pm
I got 3 tickets to the show in Burlington, VT. I’m bringing my two cousins who like country music but haven’t ever heard of Sturgill, should be fun!
January 26, 2015 @ 3:44 pm
Yeah, I was too late to get tickets to STL, Louisville, and Nasville…that was over a month ago. Bummer for sure. Folks on stubhub are trying to cash in though.
January 26, 2015 @ 5:40 pm
Missed him when he rolled through Quincy, CA, at a small music festival there and Sacramento, CA, last year (sold out). Already got tickets to see him in April in Reno, NV though.
January 26, 2015 @ 6:44 pm
I have tickets for SS on 1/31 at the Madison Theater, Covington, KY just across the river from Cincinnati. This may be a theater but it’s a very small one. This place is pretty much festival standing. I ordered my tickets the day of or just after they went on sale in early November and was surprised to see it took about 2 months for the date to sell out. Stub Hub now has a few tickets for $95+ and up. I’d say the word’s gotten out to the “unwashed masses.”

My girlfriend and I will be at the Covington show also. It will be our first show at the Madison Theater. I asked for tickets for Christmas and made it clear that if she didn’t intend to buy them to let me know so I could. I figured it would sell out and I didn’t want to have to buy marked up tickets. There are 2 available on StubHub for the low price of $188 each…

Look for me, Brandon. I’ll probably be the oldest person in the house!

So a question about album worth is the future. I have 2 copies of each in vinyl form. Two I use and two in plastic put away. If he puts them both on vinyl with Atlantic is that going to increase of decrease value of the original releases in the future?

Just grabbed two for the Crystal Palace and will see him again three weeks later at JazzFest so get to experience two different shows in a short time period. Kacey’s at Fest this year too – definitely a different slant to the lineup this year from most. It’ll be fun to see their sets win over new fans. That’s one of the best parts of Fest – lots of open minded fans there.

Happy for his success but I was able to see him in Madison, WI a little over a year ago and there were maybe 8 people at the show. I figured getting tickets this time around wouldn’t be an issue… Guess I’ll need to act faster next time around.

The lineup for the Forecastle Festival in Louisville was announced yesterday, and Sturgill will be there, as I suspected. It’s in Kentucky, and run by the same people who do Bonnaroo, so it makes sense. Might be an opportunity for someone to see him.
First Aid Kit, Shovels and Rope, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and Parker Millsap are also on the bill. Looks good!

I’m glad i got my ticket for Richmond the day they went on sale. Should be a good show being in a venue that only holds about 350 people.

Good news for you DC-area folks without a ticket to see Sturgill; tickets for the Sam Hunt concert the following night ARE still available (shocker). Nothing says love on Valentines Day like taking your significant other to hear live music which will make their ears bleed.
