The ACM’s Announce 2017 Award Nominees (Observations and Predictions)
The Academy of Country Music has just announced its 2017 batch of award nominees, and as you can imagine, it is the same usual suspects of superstar names receiving circumspect recognition in an event that is not much more than an infomercial for the industry, and fails to recognize the impact many of country’s independent artists are having on the direction of the genre at the moment.
A few of the bright spots are that Chris Stapleton is being considered for Male Vocalist, as well as Video of the Year for “Fire Away,” and Song of the Year for “Tennessee Whiskey” (even though it was never released as a single). The ACM’s actually nominated Kacey Musgraves for Female Vocalist, instead of reaching outside the genre as they often do to fill the fifth spot in mainstream country’s female void. Rhiannon Giddens also receives a nomination for her duet with Eric Church on “Kill A Word.”
But all of this is counteracted by nominations such as Kane Brown for New Male Vocalist. The only justice in that is he will very likely lose. And Keith Urban continues to be an awards show darling this cycle inexplicably.
The 2017 ACM Awards are set to take place in Las Vegas, Nev., on April 2, and air live on CBS beginning at 8PM ET. For the first time ever, the show will take place at T-Mobile Arena; Luke Bryan and Bentley will return as co-hosts.
Find some predictions and knee jerk reactions below.
2017 Academy of Country Music Awards Nominees
Entertainer of the Year
This is a two horse race that will likely result in Luke Bryan once again coming out the victor since the ACM’s didn’t add the wild card of nominating Garth Brooks. Maybe Jason Aldean slips in, but not likely. Don’t expect this to be Carrie Underwood or Keith Urban’s year. Florida Georgia Line has no chance.
Jason Aldean
Luke Bryan – WINNER
Florida Georgia Line
Carrie Underwood
Keith Urban
Male Vocalist of the Year
This is Chris Stapleton’s again, right? Is there really enough energy behind any of these other folks to put them over the top? Jason, Dierks, and even Thomas Rhett will get a push, but folks will vote their hearts, and Chris Stapleton will likely win.
Jason Aldean
Dierks Bentley
Thomas Rhett
Chris Stapleton – WINNER
Keith Urban
Female Vocalist of the Year
Hypothetically this should be Carrie Underwood’s, but Miranda’s new album and the critical acclaim it has received will at least make this interesting. What happens in the next few months may determine the winner.
Kelsea Ballerini
Miranda Lambert – Other potential winner
Maren Morris
Kacey Musgraves
Carrie Underwood – WINNER
Vocal Duo of the Year
Normally this would be a no brainer, but with Brothers Osborne shocking everyone, including themselves at the CMA’s with a win, who knows? Florida Georgia Line has become cold product, and this throws everything into question, except that Maddie & Tae have no chance.
Big & Rich
Brothers Osborne – Potential Winner
Dan + Shay – Potential Winner
Florida Georgia Line- Potential Winner
Maddie & Tae
Vocal Group of the Year
Hard to see Little Big Town’s big winning streak slowing, unless Lady Antebellum has a strong couple of months.
Eli Young Band
Little Big Town – WINNER
Old Dominion
Rascal Flatts
Lady Antebellum
Album of the Year
Yikes. Awful except for Miranda. Let’s hope she wins, but this feels like an open race fulls of dogs, and a critical underdog. Anyone’s guess, but Miranda is not a bad one. Maren has an outside chance.
Black, Dierks Bentley
Dig Your Roots, Florida Georgia Line
Hero, Maren Morris
Ripcord, Keith Urban
The Weight of These Wings, Miranda Lambert – Let’s hope.
New Male Vocalist of the Year
Kane Brown
Chris Janson
Chris Lane
Jon Pardi
Brett Young
New Female Vocalist of the Year
Why only four nominees? See, this is why females in country are so systemically marginalized. Find another name and put it here. Give that artist some recognition. Margo Price?
Lauren Alaina
Cam
Brandy Clark
Maren Morris – WINNER
New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year
A Thousand Horses
Brothers Osborne
Dan + Shay
LoCash
Maddie & Tae
Video of the Year (Awarded to Producer(s) / Director(s) / Artist(s))
“Fire Away” should win this, just like it did at the CMA’s.
“Fire Away,” Chris Stapleton – WINNER
“Forever Country,” Aritsts of Then, Now and Forever
“Humble and Kind,” Tim McGraw
“Peter Pan,” Kelsea Ballerini
“Vice,” Miranda Lambert
Vocal Event of the Year (Awarded to Artist(s) / Producer(s) / Record Label(s))
“Different for Girls,” Dierks Bentley feat. Elle King
“Forever Country,” Artists of Then, Now and Forever
“May We All,” Florida Georgia Line feat. Tim McGraw
“Setting the World on Fire,” Kenny Chesney feat. Pink
“Think of You,” Chris Young feat. Cassadee Pope
Single Record of the Year (Awarded to Artist(s) / Producer(s) / Record Label(s))
Keith Urban and Florida Georgia Line won’t win. Otherwise open field, and fairly strong.
“Blue Ain’t Your Color,” Keith Urban
“H.O.L.Y.,” Florida Georgia Line
“Humble and Kind,” Tim McGraw – Potential winner
“My Church,” Maren Morris – Potential winner
“Vice,” Miranda Lambert – Potential winner
Song of the Year (Awarded to Songwriter(s) / Publisher(s) / Artist(s)
Should be a no-brainer. Stapleton’s surge with this song is just a little old. A decently-strong field.
“Blue Ain’t Your Color,” Keith Urban (Clint Lagerberg, Hillary Lindsey, Steven Lee Olsen)
“Die a Happy Man,” Thomas Rhett (Thomas Rhett, Sean Douglas, Joe Spargur)
“Humble and Kind,” Tim McGraw (Lori McKenna) – WINNER
“Kill a Word,” Eric Church feat. Rhiannon Giddens (Eric Church, Luke Dick, Jeff Hyde)
“Tennessee Whiskey,” Chris Stapleton (Dean Dillon, Linda Hargrove)
“Vice,” Miranda Lambert (Miranda Lambert, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne)
Songwriter of the Year
This should be Lori McKenna, but Shane McAnally is Music Row’s golden goose at the moment.
Ashley Gorley
Luke Laird
Hillary Lindsey
Shane McAnally – Other Potential Winner
Lori McKenna – WINNER

Yuck. Just yuck. At least Chris Stapleton will win vocalist…I’m a little irritated Eric Church was left out of this category in favor of Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean (blah) but oh well. Stapleton will win, and that’s as it should be. I’m loving Musgraves in there, but she won’t win, unfortunately. Maren Morris will probably win everything except maybe female vocalist. I don’t dislike Maren but I think all this praise and hype is a bit much….I would like to see “Kill a Word” win, but it won’t. Would also like to see Keith Urban win for EOTY…say what you will about his pop country, but he’s a great performer and slays on a guitar….talented guy.

I think Eric Church fans are just going to have to learn to be okay with him only caring, and only competing for album awards. He’s said before that’s all he worries about, and winning Album of the Year at the CMA’s was a big deal for him. With all the lobbying for awards, especially the ACM’s, I think his peeps would rather keep their powder dry, and go for the album trophies as opposed to the personal awards.

I think he was one of the critics that voted.
As for Daddy Lessons, I would take Beyoncé’s original version over Maren Morris’s My Church (which sits at #2 on that list). It’s a more interesting song, IMO. And it’s pretty rootsy, so more in my wheelhouse.

“Why only four nominees? See, this is why females in country are so systemically marginalized. Find another name and put it here. Give that artist some recognition. Margo Price?”
This ^^^^
I’m sometimes on the other side of the political fence from any “feminist” argument, but this is ridiculous. There’s no good reason to not give a fifth artist a bit of recognition. It’s weird to think of Brandy Clark as a “new” female vocalist, but good for her to get recognized at all.
For “new male vocalist,” I’d have liked seeing Mo Pitney and/or WMMorgan in the field.

Voting ended before his tour started. Leaving him out for male vocalist is ridiculous…especially for Aldean and Bryan. But it has been over a year since his album was released, and he didn’t tour last year, so I didn’t expect to see very many noms…at least “Kill a Word” got something…

Looks like she’s got a ways to go as a live draw to catch Sturgill and Isbell. She’s playing the 9:30 Club in DC tonight (big rock club). It is sold out. Isbell last played it three years ago and Sturgill played it two years ago. They will both be headlining Merriweather Post this year, which is a big amphitheater venue. I could be wrong, but I think this is her first headline gig in the DC area, where Sturgill and Isbell started out at much smaller venues and steadily worked up to bigger ones.

Yeah, the album of the year category is awful with the sole exception of Miranda. How does ‘Mr. Misunderstood’ not get nominated for album of the year, but FGL’s ‘Dig Your Roots’ does? And for new male vocalist, we have Kane Brown and Chris Lane but not William Michael Morgan. Geeze. And even though Maren Morris is a sure win for new female vocalist, I am also appalled that Margo Price did not even receive a nomination in this category. Of course, this is what we’ve come to expect from the Academy of Country Music. And, as with the CMA, Cody Jinks is entirely ignored.
Kevin Davis

Hated Miranda Lamberts album. 24 songs and only 6 decent ones. This should not have been nominated over Brandy Clarks or Sturgil’s. I went back and read all the reviews of her album not just the typical Rolling Stone review. Do you the majority of them said it was repetitive, one of the albums should have not been included, some songs should have never left the campfire, not her most dynamic. My favorite she wants to be Beyoncé. She’s no Beyoncé. Or every time an artist puts out a double album they think it’s art. It’s not. Christ. The songs she’s released as singles are tanking. Vice dropped off Mediabase after 2 months. There are more talented women artists out there. Brandy and Margo Price for one. Just because Lambert jumped on the Stapleton wannabe wagon makes her one of you. She’s here because of WME. And now they are pushing Maren. Go back and take a listen. This album is overblown drivel.

I believe these 89 country music critics from every major media source say otherwise. As for myself and 6 of my closest friends, we have had this album on repeat since it was released. Love EVERY SINGLE SONG and the story they tell.
Kristen

Absolutely agree Jenny. It has been on repeat for me and my friends as well. It is a masterpiece of an album. Love every single song on this album. It comes from the heart and you can relate to it. No one on this list even comes close to The Weight of these wings. You can’t go by country radio or charts because its based off of what radio wants to play and not what people want to hear. They play the same artist and songs over and over.

Entertainer of the Year: awful, except for Carrie. Let’s hope she has a chance to win the biggest award of the night. God knows she deserves it over these other clowns.
Male vocalist: most definitely Chris Stapleton!
Female Vocalist: Hopefully Carrie wins this award. I’m glad to see Kacey nominated, as she is one of my favorites. I would also be fine with Miranda winning. I like Maren as a pop artist, but not really as country. As for Kelsea Ballerini, ewwwww.
Vocal Duo: I love Maddie and Tae, but I hope Brothers Osborne wins this one. I would also be okay with Dan + Shay.
Vocal group: Yikes, this one is rough. Going with Little Big Town.
Album of the Year: Definitely Miranda, without a doubt. I love The Weight of These Wings. I love Maren Morris’s Hero as a pop album, but it isn’t country in the slightest.
New male artist: Jon Pardi is fucking awesome, I hope he wins this. I would also be okay with Chris Janson. But the other three, are you fucking kidding me?!?!? You know who got snubbed from this category? William Michael Morgan, that’s who. He for sure deserved the nomination before Chris Lane and Kane Brown, both of whom are well on their way to becoming huge jokes. Brett Young, yawn. WMM deserves to be here with Pardi and Janson.
New female vocalist: I’d be okay with any of them.
New vocal group/duo: Brothers Osborne or Maddie and Tae.

Trigger
February 16, 2017 @ 11:45 am
Hey Greg,
No offense is meant to Carrie Underwood. She might be the most worthy in the group, but we all know country is a boys club, and the boys in this category will unfortunately lock out anyone else truly worthy of the distinction. Maybe I’ll be wrong.

February 16, 2017 @ 10:29 am
Was I the only one shocked to see the CMA backed Forever Country song/video receive 2 ACM nominations? It seems like it should be a favorite to win one if people will vote for it. For me, though, it perfectly represents why the CMAs are better than the ACMs and thus I wouldn’t think the ACM would want to shine light on it.
I know the award shows are always like this, but seems like some pretty outdated nominations, especially in the “New Artist” categories. Speaking of, I like Jon Pardi’s chances as he has had the most recent success of the group and has followed it up with another song climbing the charts. That would be a pretty positive development, even if his current single isn’t very traditional.

These nominations are a total joke. It’s all political with who agencies are currently pushing. Heck half the people in some categories haven’t even done anything this year. When it’s this obviously political it’s hard to take even the winner seriously.
At this point the fan voted awards might have more credibility…at least fans care & buy tickets & reaching people is part of the pint of music.

Interesting nominees this year… would love for Carrie to pull away with Entertainer of the Year after she (more or less) got snubbed by Garth with the 50th Anniversary hype at the CMA’s, but I suppose that’s wishful thinking. I was also bothered that the ACM’s couldn’t even think of a 5th nominee for Female Best New Artist. Says a lot about the current state of mainstream country right now. If only they could think of an independent artist; like you said, Margo Price would’ve been a viable option.

Same old same old. With Carrie planning to take some time off I guess Kelsea will slip into her role and I wouldn’t be surprised if they reward Miranda with album and then retire her for Maren. Kacey, Margo and all the other well deserving women in country will be there to fill out the categories. The best part of the show is going to be laughing at the plummeting ratings the next day.

completely agree about lauren alaina, been listening to her new album the past couple weeks and as far as pop country goes, it’s pretty solid. However her success is just a little bit too fresh, road less traveled is only just now slipping towards the top 10, give her a year and a couple more hits (if radio doesn’t gravitate towards this record and play it they’re nuts) and she’ll take new artist around cma time but at this moment i think maren takes it

It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago he’s “entertainer of the *year*” and now can’t even get nominated. Now maybe the awards will spare us from a performance by him. Yep….seen her three times live. Friggin powerful. And she is genuine. She sat and talked with me, my wife and two kids for awhile after the first show we saw her. Then a few nights later she did a freeshow at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun. Signed stuff and talked to everyone there after the show.
