Zephaniah OHora Announces New Album “Listening to the Music”

It’s been a long and arduous wait for many classic country fans sitting on the edge of their seats for the second record from country songsmith and crooner Zephaniah OHora. But arrive it will on August 28th, with a new song “All American Singer” available now (listen below). Being a somewhat strange bird as a country singer from Brooklyn, NY, he blew many away with his debut This Highway from 2017, and looks to do it again with the new 12-song set.
“People think you have to be from Texas or Nashville to play this music,” says Zephaniah OHora. “But that’s not the way I see it. Country’s all about being true to yourself and telling honest, authentic stories. You can do that anywhere.”
Recorded at The Bunker in Brooklyn, NY and produced by the late Neal Casal in April of 2019, Casal’s passing a few months later was one of the reasons for the delay in the release. “My hope is that this recording shines a light on the unique gift Neal had,” says OHora. “Whether he was on stage in front of thousands or in a small recording studio with friends, Neal connected with people through music in a profound and lasting way. His legacy serves as a reminder of just how precious a commodity music is for humankind. I’m thankful I got to experience the growth that comes with working with someone who embodied that.”
Drawing comparisons to country music’s Countrypolitan era in style, and Merle Haggard’s voice and writing, both come into play in the album’s debut song, which reminds you somewhat of Merle’s “The Fightin’ Side of Me,” but with a much more balanced and modern tone with an effort to diffuse as opposed to incite.

“I’ve always seen music as a tool for uniting people,” says OHora. “A good song can bring people together, no matter what ideology they’ve adopted. It can serve as a source of solace or a tool for self-reflection. It can remind us what we all share in common … I wanted to write songs that weren’t all doom and gloom this time around. I wasn’t in a relationship when I was writing this record, but I was looking at the couples in my life and thinking a lot about the kind of person I hoped to meet.”
Joining Zephaniah in the studio once again is steel guitar player Jon Graboff who brought so much magic to his first record, as well as John Shannon on guitar, the aformentioned Neal Casal, as well as notable guest players Courtney Jaye singing backup, Dori Freeman also singing on a couple of songs, and Mickey Raphael on harmonica.

amazing single art too, he’s really got it
June 6, 2020 @ 8:24 am
Man. I love his sound! I hear a lot of Merle’s “I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am” here. Thanks for introducing me to Zeph’s music on here a while back.
June 6, 2020 @ 8:34 am
It’s so smooth and doesn’t sound forced. I love it
June 6, 2020 @ 8:41 am
Zephaniah doesn’t even have to rhyme his phrases, and he still sounds better than most.
June 6, 2020 @ 2:23 pm
Thank you, Trigger. Cannot wait. Best news in what has been a terrible year.

Smooth as Hudson Bay Whiskey.

Great stuff. Every producer and recording engineer in the industry needs to listen to the Orora albums and learn from them.

I’m wondering if he’s native to the northeast or of he’s a carpetbagger. I like his stuff so it doesn’t matter either way, I just like to know an artist’s hometown.
June 6, 2020 @ 10:26 am
Born in New Hampshire. Live Free or Die.
June 8, 2020 @ 12:17 pm
Thank you, sir
June 8, 2020 @ 1:21 pm
Lol @ the idea that there’s an issue with being a carpet bagger in the northeast when trying to be a country musician.
June 8, 2020 @ 9:55 pm
I’m okay with the Lol’s, but “yankee twang” is a real thing. If you don’t believe me, there’s a book with that exact name that describes the whole history of it. I specifically seek out country music from natives of this region because I do believe it has its own feel. Call me crazy.

Hell yea!
Maybe Stu should make an album of this guy’s material instead… 😛

He has a really good voice that sounds like it promises to get richer with age.
Might be me, but sounds like his voice could be brought more to the forefront, with less reverb.
He doesn’t need anything artificial helping him out.
He has been Blessed with a great voice

Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner. Hes got it. Ive been fortunate to see him live twice. Ive been saying all along there’s a Haggard feel and this song really showcases it. Man, the world is in flames today, but we have new music to give us a little distraction. Mike and the Pies, THIS, and soon Mo Pitney. This seems to be the year of good releases!
June 6, 2020 @ 11:45 am
I also hear a lot of “I take a lot of pride in what I am”. I think he sounds more like Merle than ever and that’s great with me!
June 6, 2020 @ 12:52 pm
I love this guy, and the musicians are deeply knowledgeable in the tradition. The non-rhymes used to bother me, but now I hear it as a preference for honest communication over some kind of pat formula or some forced idea. And let’s not forget Aaron Nevezie’s superb engineering.
Pre-ordered with a tip.

I don’t feel as much Merle, as I get more of a Glen Campbell plays and sings the songs of Kristofferson. [not at all a criticism].
June 6, 2020 @ 1:44 pm
Can’t wait for this full album! This song is fantastic!
June 6, 2020 @ 2:07 pm
Been looking forward to this. Thank you Triggerman, man.
June 6, 2020 @ 3:50 pm
I loved the first album and am really looking forward to the new release, I agree with Paddy and Kevin Smith, that this being a challenging year there are so many great things coming out, gives me optimism for the future of our kind of music,
I’m glad that my friend John Graboff is on the new album, he has become one of my favorite steel players and his work on the first release was exceptional. And the hits just keep comin’!

Great start for a release I could not be more excited about. This Highway was the surprise of the year when it came out, and It sounds like the new album is on it’s way to being just as good.
As is pointed out above, his voice is smooth and effortless. I could listen to his music all day.

Good to hear Courtney Jaye is still making music. Her 2010 album The Exotic Sounds of Courtney Jaye was pretty wonderful. Here’s to hoping she does some up front singing again as well.
June 7, 2020 @ 12:25 am
This is very Merle Haggard in sound. No bad thing. Great song.
June 7, 2020 @ 6:56 am
Brilliant
June 7, 2020 @ 9:05 am
Love it. Played This Highway on repeat and this sounds even better – like others said a lot of Merle in there.
Was afraid he was gonna get political but honestly the lyrics are intelligent, measured, and thoughtful. Breath of fresh air. Looking forward to the rest of the album.
“They take pride in takin sides but I’m proud to be an all-American singer.” He puts hacks like Isbell to shame, seriously. And sorry in advance for bringing up Isbell, couldn’t resist.
June 7, 2020 @ 9:38 am
Wow! Great song, really sounds like Merle without tryin’ to sound like Merle!
June 7, 2020 @ 11:10 am
Great to here another wonderful under-the-radar Country artist, and especially a fellow Granite Stater!
Don’t take New Hampshire for granite!! Sorry, I had too…..
Good stuff!
I have learned about so much great music from this website, my problem is trying to find the time to listen to it all! Everytime I find out about a great album, there are 2 or 3 more right after it!
THIS is Country music!!!!!
June 7, 2020 @ 1:49 pm
How come OlaR hasn’t hijacked this thread to distract us towards a bunch of slick unknown other artists?
June 8, 2020 @ 6:09 am
It sounds great, but the lyrics are kind of corny? I hate to have that reaction cause I’m a big fan and will definitely get the record, but it’s hard not to find this track kind of cheesy.
June 9, 2020 @ 1:08 am
This song is brilliant.
June 9, 2020 @ 4:42 am
Loved his first album and was bummed he cancelled his eurotour in favor of recording his next album. Totally worth it!
July 17, 2020 @ 6:27 pm
Ah, 2016/17 was a great time and Ive missed him. Glad zeph is back – now we just need more luke bell!
