Outlaw country legend Billy Joe Shaver died on Wednesday, October 28th after suffering a massive stroke on the morning of October 27th while in a rehabilitation facility. He was 81 years old.
A visitation will be held for Billy Joe Shaver from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3rd at the Waco Memorial Mausoleum Chapel at 6623 South Interstate 35, Waco, TX 76706. The visitation is open to the public.
Then on Wednesday, November 4th, there will be graveside visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the same Waco Memorial Park location. This is also open to the public. A private ceremony will also be held at the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday for invited guests.
Billy Joe Shaver will be buried near his wife Brenda, and his son Eddy, who was also a musician, and passed away in 2000. Billy Joe is survived by his sister, Patricia, and multiple nieces and nephews. The family has requested memorials to be made in Billy Joe’s name to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children or to St. Judes Children Research Hospital.
Born in Corsicana, TX, Billy Joe Shaver spent much of his youth and adult life in Waco. His mother ran a Waco honky tonk called Green Gables where a young Billy Joe spent much of his time. One of his many nicknames was the “Wacko From Waco,” which was memorialized in a 2011 song featuring Willie Nelson.

I’m going to be looking for the live feed tomorrow once it appears, and if possible, I will embed it at the bottom of this article. I spoke to the manager of Waco Memorial Park today, and he said they’re planning to stream the event, but it’s really dependent on them if, how, and when that happens.

My wife and I saw Billy Joe at Sisters in Gun Barrel City some years ago. He was the opening act but stole the show. A true Texas treasure. Will always remember how genuine lhe was. RIP BJS.

Saying Eddy Shaver was “also a musician” is like saying Kobe Bryant was “also a basketball player”! Obviously Trigger knows that, not trying to ruffle feathers, but if anyone here hasn’t checked out his work do yourself a favor! A particular favorite album he worked on was called “Honky Tonk Heros” (not to be confused with Waylons album) and it features vocals by Billy Joe, Waylon, Kris and Willie. If I remember right ES played most of the instruments. Bear Family released it I believe but I think it may be out of print.

Eddy Shaver really deserves his own deep dive here, and I’ve been meaning to do that for years. I agree, “also a musician” does not really reflect his impact. I didn’t want to bury the lead so to speak and post a biography of him in this particular article. But I think it’s safe to say that siring and raising Eddy is one of Billy Joe’s greatest accomplishments. Just a shame he left us so early.

Eddy was indeed a monster guitar player. I had that album you mention and loved it. I dont know why it went out of print. Seems like that album was very under the radar. If you were a Highwayman fan, it was a must. No Cash on it, but the other 3 with Shaver and son.
I do have Billy Joe live at Austin City Limits, which is an entire hour plus of Billy and Eddy. Grab that DVD if you see it. Footage of Eddy is worth the admission alone.

I only got on to Billy Joe a couple years ago and he blew me away. Never got to see him live. One of the greatest disappointments of my life. Never see the likes of him again.
