Cody Jinks Releases New Song – Teases Live Album
This story has been updated.
Despite the long beard and tough exterior Cody Jinks exudes as a fiercely traditional country artist with an Outlaw bent and a heavy metal past, he’s never been one for passing judgement or laying blame on anybody. In fact he’s railed against such things in his music often, pointing the finger back at all the finger pointing as feckless and fruitless under a “live and let live” ideology. One of Cody’s signature songs “Cast No Stones” is about that very subject.
Many artists are releasing songs these days that seem eerily prescient to the pandemic, pulling them out of their stockpile of B-sides and studio extras, or some that were written in the midst of the shutdown. Cody Jinks is the latest, releasing “Watch The World Die” as a standalone single—the second he’s released in the last few months along with “Fast Lane” to help give the sick and shut in some reprieve. He wrote the song solo and recorded it as part of the sessions for his album I’m Not The Devil released in 2016.
In this doomsday scenario, all the incessant bickering and blame laying leads to bombs falling and fires burning, and whether he’s speaking figuratively or literally, Cody’s solution for this grave scenario is for him and his is to head back to the bedroom and enjoy the company of each other as the end of days draws nigh.
“Watch The World Die” is just as much as a love story as it is anything, while Cody’s signature sound of loud, heavy, thunderous country music instrumentation makes for a worthy presentation for a song about the Apocalypse.
All indications are that “Watch The World Die” is not tied to any impending new studio album. After all, Jinks released two just late last year. However he did recently announce his intention to release a live album at some point in the future tied to his landmark, sold-out performance at the famous Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado on July 13th, 2019. There’s also rumors he will have an acoustic album on the way. Stay tuned on more details about these albums when they become available.
In the meantime, you can spin “Watch The World Die” below.

The new songs could have been from when he went to the studio in December. He said before the last two albums were released that he was hitting the studio in December.

Just updated the story. Was told he wrote and recorded it originally as part of the sessions for “I’m Not The Devil.” There’s also new word of a potential acoustic album, so that may have been what he was doing in December, if he isn’t working on a new studio album as well.

He mentioned working on the red rocks live show and a possible acoustic album on his quarantine from the office live stream a few weeks ago. That live stream was awesome and hope he does another one. He mentioned doing 80’s and 90’s covers or acoustic versions of rock songs.

His livestream was probably best performance I’ve seen an artist do during this whole crap. It was awesome

Not bad, but a pretty standard and forgettable rock song. It’s interesting how Jinks gets a pass from fans for stuff like this, but people go insane when someone like Sturgill does it….even when his non-country stuff (thinking Sailor’s Guide) was far beyond standard and forgettable.

Well, “Standard and forgettable” is your opinion, first off. So people may disagree with that opinion. But I would say the biggest difference here is this is a song Cody Jinks is releasing randomly that he originally deemed not good enough to include on an album, so I’m not sure if even his opinion of it is very high. Meanwhile “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth” was nominated for the all genre Grammy Album of the Year. I don’t see people losing their minds over this song. It’s just a B-side he threw out there. Take it or leave it. I think the song’s pretty good.

Fair points, but my main point is that Jinks always gets a pass somehow from fans, not necessarily from SCM. I think it has a lot to do with the whole “flocker” thing, and people just naturally love basic rock songs (about 80% of Lifers falls into this category). Nothing wrong with that, but it’s a shame to waste his voice on such boring material when we all know what he’s capable of. My guess is he can pretty much put out anything at this point and it will get almost uniform praise. I’m sure l’ll get raked over the coals, but I would love to see him do an album with the aid of some co-writers, a proper producer / sound engineer, and some hot shit country musicians.

Flocker?
Rest assured i am probably the least “flocking” person on the website, or anywhere else you would encounter.
I appreciate quality when i hear/see/experience it

This issue is not about Cody Jinks getting a pass. It’s about Sturgill Simpson putting himself in the position of an extremely polarizing character after telling half his fan base he didn’t want them listening to his music. Sturgill used to receive those same free passes until he started insulting his own fans. Meanwhile Cody Jinks goes out of his way to make sure his fans know that they’re appreciated. Should that affect judgements on Sturgill’s music? No, it shouldn’t. But it does.

That was post “busking” incident. I’m more referring to the “horns suck! What is this crap?” sentiments when ASGTE came out. I think the difference is that rock songs are a lot easier for the general public do digest than classic soul / R&b. I totally agree on the point though….Sturgill is King Troll and loves pissing people off, which has the exact results that he is looking for. Cody seems like a normal, nice dude and that goes a long way when it comes to keeping a loyal fan base.

Was not going to comment,
but, i think Cody’s voice is stellar on this song

It’s not bad, but pretty much on all of his recent output his vocals are either rushed (he often tries to fit too many words into a bar of music, which always stands out like a sore thumb imo), or he just sounds bored. This is the result of the rock song structures and his voice / singing style not being a great fit for it. Compare vocals on most of his recent stuff to a song like She’s All Mine. Night and day.
It’s no surprise at all that this song didn’t make the cut for I’m Not the Devil. But, it would fit perfectly on Lifers.

Hi Billy,
Sorry took so long to reply.
Going to do what you suggest, and listen to She’s All Mine, sometime by this weekend.

I love his old school work ethic. Even if this song is old, many artists are content to disappear for 3 or 4 years between releases and give us nothing. With our current oversaturation of listening options across all genres, I really appreciate artists that keep in the fold and won’t let you forget them. 2015-2019 Cody gave us 5 full length albums so thank you Mr. Jinks for being a source of consistency for us all, especially in these times

Cody is prolific that’s for sure, one more reason to love him. Not only that his quality equals his quantity. That’s why he’s # 1. I think I said it on here way back, a double live album of the I’m Not The Devil tour would’ve been a perfect time or even a Lifers tour live album but we’ll take one now!!! I’m still loving Fire and Wanting……a lot. Song for song there’s nobody as good as good as Cody………………Nobody. He was supposed to be here with Whitey in 2 weeks but then it rained……….it rained ohhhhhh it rained, ….it stopped for a little while, and then it rained. 😉

That’s the great thing about the comments. We can all have our own opinion, even if wildly different 😄

No Billy, I think you misunderstood my comment or maybe I didn’t say it right. I really wasn’t referring to this particular song which I’ve only listen to a couple of times and can take or leave. I was just talking about over all. I know what you mean about the trying to fit “too many words” in a verse etc…..but I don’t feel the songs on both new albums Fire/Wanting are like that for the most part but sure on some songs I hear what you’re saying. I still love most of those songs and Lifers too. These stray songs he’s releasing now are because he’s bored and he knows we’re bored. We all know he’d rather be out playing like everyone else would but at least he’s doing something like working on the Live thing which I’m looking forward to!

Agreed. And I think Adobe Sessions and I’m Not the Devil are up there with the best albums if recent years. I just can’t get into the stuff following that, but I will keep trying!

Trig, I hate leaving a comment that’s not about the post but can we expect a review for this poorly written Reckless Kelly album that just dropped?
Trigger
May 22, 2020 @ 6:32 pm
Thanks for the interest. The new Reckless Kelly is definitely being considered for review. Tessy Lou Williams was my top priority for this week’s releases and as a double album, I want to make sure I give the Reckless Kelly enough listening time before reviewing it.

I am certainly a Flocker and have seen Jinks play live numerous times. Dude is awesome live. Having said that, this song is ok, and not fantastic like a lot are saying IMO. If fact if Flockers were being honest, I am curious if literally any other country singer wrote and recorded this, if their first thought would be “that son of a bitch ripped off Same Kind Of Crazy”. The beginning of this song is nearly identical I think. I am looking forward to the Red Rocks live album since I saw it in person. I am curious what songs he will have on the acoustic album too. I am hoping he makes an album out of left field that is awesome and not what the Flockers are expecting. He would have to do it after these next two reported albums of course. Those sound like Cody coasting, and giving the fans what they want.

Cody gets “a pass” because he earns it. Not every damn song from any artist is spectacular. His “misses” aren’t some tailgate song, or alter ego. Fast Lane may be his finest song ever. So following it with a song that didn’t make the cut isn’t a fail, its just the unfortunate followup to an unbelievable song
