New Version of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies” Finally Coming
The Nexflix Original series The Ranch starring Ashton Kutcher and Sam Elliot has been showcasing great country and roots artists in their soundtrack for seven seasons now, despite mixed reviews for the show itself, the polarizing laugh track, and the departure of one of the main characters, “Rooster,” after actor Danny Masterson got #MeToo’d. Whatever you think about the show itself, it’s resulted in some serious mailbox money for many cool artists, including Corb Lund, the Turnpike Troubadours, American Aquarium, Brandi Carlile, John Moreland, Whitney Rose, Sam Outlaw, the Cactus Blossoms, and so many more whose music was featured in the series.
Country legends like Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam were also featured in the soundtrack, and jokes and commentary on country music regularly made their way into the script. But now the series is coming to a close after the eighth part gets released by Netflix on January 24th, 2020. To celebrate the final season, Curb Records (cough) will be releasing a 12-song “soundtrack” for the show, featuring some of the big songs that appeared during the season. That is, they’ll be featured if they come from artists signed to Curb such as Mo Pitney, Lee Brice, and Wynonna and the Big Noise.
But there is one exception, and it’s the one country fans have been salivating for ever since they first heard the opening for the Netflix series. Shooter Jennings and Lukas Nelson got together to recreate the magic of their famous fathers on a new rendition of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” originally written and performed by Ed Bruce with his wife Patsy. But of course you only get a teaser version of the song in the opening segment of The Ranch. Now the full version of the song will finally be made available in the Curb-released soundtrack.
The music supervisor for The Ranch is Frankie Pine, who was also the music supervisor for ABC’s big country music drama Nashville. Similarly, Nashville won praise for not just selecting songs from mainstream artists, but digging a little deeper to find the right song for the right moment.
The Ranch (A Netflix Original Series Official Soundtrack) will be available January 24th, 2020, with a limited-edition vinyl version available February 14th.

I’m not a TV guy and even less of a sitcom guy, but I watched the first few seasons just to pull the songs and artists featured for folks who were looking for them. It’s like your stock network sitcom with cussing, but it has its moments. Sam Elliot is pretty good, and the episodes got better as it went on, until they writing fell apart in about the fourth or fifth season, and I couldn’t hang.

Dude, I’ve probably received some 100 emails of folks asking where they can get a version of this song since I was covering the songs featured in the series. Also seeing the reaction on social media over this, yes, folks are salivating. And as someone who almost always prefers the original version of a song, I think this is a pretty cool pairing, and from what we’ve heard so far, a promising version of a song. This is one of the few instances where a new version works.

Yikes, that’s Shooter and Lukas? I’ve watched The Ranch since the beginning, and Netflix’s “Skip Intro” option has been great for avoiding the credits. I just figured it was some no-name hipster group covering it though. I guess the apples fell far from the trees.

The cover no one asked for
Would like to see Jason Boland and Jackson Taylor or Whitey Morgan and Cody Jinks cover the song
Hank³ could do a good cover if someone else produced him

I just heard Ward Davis, Josh Morningstar, Clint Park, and Alex Williams sing it together at Bucks Bar and Grill in little Venice, Nebraska the other night.

No interest. I was extremely disappointed in Lukas’ recent album and I’ve never liked Shooter’s music at all.

You can call a girl a cowboy.
Reference the Garth Brooks song “that girl is a cowboy” which is a really good Garth song.
You could also call an alphabet a cowboy, but the occasion to do so isn’t likely to come up very often.

I for one have always wondered if Shooter and Lukas might record together , strictly for the fun of it . Well, here it is! Is it as good a version as their legendary fathers? Perhaps not, but it’s still fun. I swear some of yall are too serious here. Relax, have a shot of some good ol sipping corn, sit back and chill! No crime committed here.
By the way, I am also an Ed Bruce fan, the guy who wrote this song. His baritone voice is pretty epic. Give him a listen if you haven’t before. I recommend ” My First Taste of Texas”.

I agree with you. Waylon’s dead and he ain’t coming back. The recording evokes Waylon and Willie, and for me, that makes it fun to hear.

I saw Shooter in a one man show in a small venue- I wouldn’t walk across the street to see him again- he didn’t sing he hollered- he didn’t play his guitar he tried to beat it to death- right after the last song? he vanished- he comes across as a rude, entitled prick. I wouldn’t care if Jesus Christ was his Daddy- my two sons and their wives were there as well and felt the same way.

Interesting. I didn’t know it was Shooter and Lukas who sang the intro song on the Ranch, they sound unrecognizable. I always thought it was somebody else. I don’t think their version is particularly good, in my opinion, but maybe I’m just frazzled and have the original on too high a pedestal. Might give it a second chance after hearing the full song, though.
Am I the only one who thinks Cody Jinks, Dallas Moore, or perhaps even Ray Wylie Hubbard could have done a better cover?

Danny Masterson was not #metoo’d. Five different, creditable women have accused him of rape and sexual assault. These are serious disturbing allegations and do not deserve your flippant attitude towards them. Please do not belittle your readers and the trauma of sexual assault.

My comments were not intended to be “flippant.” If I was being flippant, I wouldn’t have mentioned the situation at all. The serious and disturbing accusations against Danny Masterson was one of the reasons I chose to stop covering the series and the music featured on it, though I also still believe in the Western society tenet that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and it’s important for all of us to understand that Danny Masterson has yet to be charged with any crime, let alone convicted of one.
This article wasn’t about Danny Masterson, and was only about The Ranch by proxy. A lot of people have been asking when this song would be made available, and I was simply answering that question.

“You Turn Me On (Like a Radio) is a favorite one of mine of his, if you’re in to the Urban Cowboy bandwagon music made back in the day. It definitely has that sound to it.

Jeebus. That’s what I get for breaking my rule about reading comments. It’s a song, not a religious artifact. Listen to it or don’t. Nobody cares.

If you don’t like reading the comments, then don’t read the comments. No one is twisting your arm. I’m a music “thrillogy” if you will and I really dig this stuff so dont read the comments because no one cares except me and about a couple billion other people.

Lucas has made some good music, but I agree that his latest album is a major let down. I never liked shooter’s music at all, and when he insulted John Mayer he lost any credibility he may have had left.

I like the cover. Lukas is the obvious stand out because he has a great voice. I thought the idea of him and Shooter covering the song that their fathers made a hit out of was a cool idea.
