See Charley Crockett on Tour When You Can
I’m just warning you right now folks, similar to the warnings issued for Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Billy Strings and the like. See your favorite independent artist in an intimate setting when you can, because sometimes these guys catch fire, and next thing you know you’re staring at your computer screen or phone and trying to justify dropping three figures on nosebleeds seats.
Charley Crockett is quickly rising up the ranks of independent country artists, and you can tell that by the type of venues he’s starting to book during his current tour, and the festivals adding him to their rosters. If you got the opportunity to see him in a small club with a gaggle of like-minded souls, count yourself lucky. If he’s coming to your area and playing a smaller haunt, don’t skip out. Even if he’s playing a theater, see him when you can, because it might be an even bigger one next time he comes through town.
Along with playing at Under the Big Sky Fest in Montana, the Austin City Limits Fest both weekends, Hinterland, Blue Ox, MerleFest, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Charley Crockett will be playing at all kinds of cool places this summer and into the fall, like the Turf Club in St. Paul, and the Mercury Ballroom in Louisville.
Speaking to his rising stock, Crockett’s currently being featured in a display beside fellow South Texas native Freddy Fender at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Folks just driving past the Hall these days have been remarking at the big banner right out front with Crockett’s name on it, causing many to ask who he is, and liking the answer when they work to find out.
Charley Crockett released a tribute to James “Slim” Hand in February called 10 For Slim, and an original record in 2020 called Welcome to Hard Times. With how prolific he is, don’t be surprised if you hear about another record on the way from him sooner or later.
And make sure you go see him if he comes to your town.

Hell yea, I saw him open for Tyler Childers/Turnpike at John T Floores a few years back and have been able to see him a couple times since then as well. Hes a show I won’t be missing anytime hes nearby except for the White Oak show since its the stupid block seating and you can’t buy just one ticket

I saw him open for Turnpike, too, but it was at Red Rocks in 2018. Same deal. He was on when the sun was still out and most of the people in the sold out show were still tailgating. He was awesome.

Worst part about living in New England is that these artists hardly make it up here.

Well I live in England (actual England), and I’ve seen him, supported by Jaime Wyatt. He was great, so was she.

Seems like these US based indie country/Americana artists get some good touring in UK and Europe. I believe Crockett actually lived and performed in Europe for some time before starting his recording career back in the US. I think it’s a lucrative novelty over there to experience this sort of American music, sort of like blues, jazz, and r&b in the mid century. Many of those artist made their careers there, and even moved there for good.
Here in the US, particularly in the urban centers if the North East, this sort of music and the culture behind it is treated with derision so it’s not quite as lucrative for artists to tour much in that region.

Having grown up in the NYC suburbs and lived the vast majority of my adult life in the DC suburbs, I would say that the latter is more roots music friendly than the former. Still, you probably need a little NPR attention to get much of a toehold around here. I think that happened a bit for Dale Watson. And of course, mainstream country is popular enough, but I’m guessing that’s more outside of the beltway. We’ve always had a mainstream country radio station whereas NYC went without one for a good number of years. My understanding is that they always had a fair amount of listeners in NYC, but not the right age demographic for advertisers.
There’s an independent country station in Fredericksburg, but now you’re talking exurbs. They play the same pop country as iHeart Radio during the week, but they’ll play NASCAR live coverage on the weekends sometimes and some good gospel music on Sunday mornings.

DC/DMV is a good area for bluegrass and roots music for sure. Jiffy Lube Live out in Bristow, VA, hosts a lot of bigger commercial country, but it’s a real hike getting out there and back. Gotta factor an extra three hours just to get in and out of that parking lot.
I have seen most country artists I want to see in the area, so I shouldn’t complain too much, but you have to be really informed so as not to miss those rare tours for smaller artists that do make their way through.

I live about 15 miles southwest of the beltway and I would rather drive to Merriweather Post than go to Jiffy Lube. I’m still traumatized from the time I saw John Fogerty there in ’97 and the 2+ hours it took to get out of the parking lot. Saw the Allmans in the late aughts there, but a friend was able to get VIP tickets through our company. The best part was the VIP parking lot.
I’ve noticed at least a few independent country acts on the Pearl Street Warehouse schedule (e.g., Mike and the Moonpies, Sarah Shook), but the Wharf isn’t a great option for me (either long drive/metro ride combo or ridiculous parking cost). Went to Union Stage once and walked past PSW and could see the stage and the music act from the street. Looked like a cool venue.
Yep, saw some really good bluegrass shows at the old Birchmere in the ’90s. Saw The Seldom Scene a couple of months back at the current Birchmere. Not the classic lineup, but all except one did play with John Duffy at one point or another.

Mid Atlantic too. Had tickets to see Charley, Simpson, Childers, Moonpies and others in DC in 2020 but the pandemic happened. All shows cancelled. None have rescheduled shows in DC since. Crockett is the one dude I haven’t seen yet and have been dying to see for years. Hope he makes another try for the East Coast or else I might legitimately have to fly cross country to see him.

I think since the Northeast, Pacific Northwest, and Southern California have been some of the regions slowest to ease restrictions, some artists and promoters have been reluctant to book shows there. They’ll get there eventually.

Had tickets for Simpson/Childers at Anthem, Robert Plant at Lincoln Theater and Elvis Costello at Wolf Trap. All canceled. Also, had every intention of seeing James McMurtry and Molly Tuttle at the Birchmere in March and April, respectively. Both shows canceled. I did see Molly Tuttle there on 5/28. First post-COVID restrictions show I’ve seen there. Just great. What a player. Great stage presence.

I’m in New England, too. This summer we’ve got Billy Strings, Blackberry Smoke, Zac Brown, Chris Stapleton w/ Nikki Lane, and the Outlaw show with Willie, Sturgill, and Margo Price. I mean, those are good choices but the up and comers in the little venues for a modest price are harder to come by this year.

He played a bunch of smaller shows around the Austin area just as the pandemic was winding down, keeping it close to home until everything opened up 100%. My guess is he’ll come back around by the late fall or winter.

Also, Charley Crockett’s ACL taping is July 28th. ACL tapings this season haven’t been open to the public, just “donors,” even though everywhere else in Texas is wide open.

Plus one on this. I saw him in 2019 at a small (500 max) club here in Asheville, NC. He did a show here in May in an outdoor venue with probably 3x that many people. He seems to be Tyler on repeat.

Part of me loves the exposure you give these bands. The other part of me, the grown up punk kid, thinks…shhhhhh. Not yet. I haven’t had a chance to see Mr. Crockett and don’t want my first time to be surrounded by newbs.

That’s kinda how I am too. I’m thrilled that these artists get the recognition they so clearly deserve, but I (and my wallet) prefer shows at smaller venues, so once they get big, I have a hard time pulling the trigger on buying tickets. I haven’t seen Sturgill since his Sunday Valley days and I never had a chance to see Tyler before he blew up. Luckily I live in Texas (about 45 minutes north of Dallas), so I should be able to catch Charley a couple more times before he skyrockets.

and I never had a chance to see Tyler before he blew up.
I had a chance, but not many. I feel that he blew up faster than Isbell and Sturgill did in the DC area. I underestimated how fast he’d sell out at one I had my eye on (9:30 Club). And then had tickets for Sturgill/Childers, but then, well, you know…

If you’re near Dallas/FTW, Joshua Ray Walker and Vincent Neil Emerson are artists to “worry” about blowing up big, imo.

$25 to see Charley Crockett in a Mexican restaurant’s parking lot on the far southside of Chicago after 4 local bands, with the show being finished by 8 pm? game day decision.

My favorite Charley Crockett quote:
” People who’ve seen my video ask me sometimes, Hey Charley Crockett, can you really ride a horse like that? I tell em, of course i can ride a horse! And you know what else i can do? Make a living playing Country Music. Can you do that?!”

Saw Charley in Macon, Georgia, in September 2017. A hurricane was blowing through so they made the concert free to get people to come. Hell of a good show.

I saw him at the Basement East in Nashville about a month before the tornado hit the building, which ended up being my only show of last year. The guy’s no joke. Jaime Wyatt opened, so that was a bonus.

I’m seeing him at Delfino Farm in July 10. Lucked out after originally missing the presale. Fortunately I’m a wine club member and the owner managed to get me a couple seats. Absolutely ecstatic at the idea of seeing him live.

I’ll have to see if I can catch him at Merlefest. The Mountain Song Festival is a little closer to me but it’s sold out. I’m not fond of Brevard anyway to be honest. I like Ferraris and Porsches but it’s weird to see them on the streets of a little mountain town.

Trig — I am seeing Charley Crocket tonight at the same small venue in Boston where I first saw Sturgill in 2014, once again thanks to you. Also saw Childers at a small venue thanks to you. (I had tickets to Billy Strings at a smaller place, but ended up not being able to go).
I am getting pumped right now and just wanted to say thanks!
