Carly Pearce & Aaron Watson Give Glimmers of Hope for Country Radio

Kelsea Ballerini topping the country airplay charts is no victory for country’s women. Not because Kelsea isn’t female, but because she’s not country. A pop song gracing the top of the charts is a false positive, and only creates a new set of problems for the genre. Same goes for Lauren Alaina scoring a backdoor #1 recently by appearing on Kane Brown’s godawful “What Ifs.”
But Carly Pearce gives one true hope for the future of women on country radio as her debut single “Every Little Thing” hits #1 on the radio charts this week. It’s the first debut #1 by a solo woman since Kelsea Ballerini’s “Love Me Like You Mean It” from July of 2015. Before then, you had to go all the way back to Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” from 2006 to find another female debut #1.
There are a few healthy caveats with this distinction for Carly of course. “Every Little Thing” is still way more pop than country, thanks to producer busbee. Yet the country texturing is present instead of omitted, and it’s a dark song about heartache, which is as rare these days in the mainstream as a woman on the country radio charts. The song was also helped well along by iHeartMedia’s “On The Verge” program, which gave the song a shot of early adrenaline. Yet most experts feel it made it to #1 mostly under its own volition.
At least Carly Pearce has a solid country background, coming up through the ranks playing bluegrass at Dolly Parton’s Pigeon Forge as opposed to being a manufactured pop star proffered up by the industry as its next tokenistic female. Often radio is about ingratiating yourself to the powers that be, and proving to them that if given a chance, you can succeed. “Every Little Thing” hitting #1 gives not only that open door to more quality songs from Carly such as her stellar “If My Name Was Whiskey,” any woman gracing the charts with a song of substance gives a glimmer of hope to the format.
Same goes for independent artists, and the success Aaron Watson continues to have with his song “Outta Style.” It continues to rewrite conventional wisdom about country radio, sitting now at #17 on the charts, which was unthinkable from a truly independent artist in previous years. As much as this is about Aaron Watson getting his name out there, it’s also about stretching the limits of what could be capable from any independent artist in the future. You have to ask frankly, is all the effort to get Watson this high and maintain him there worth it? It very well might be in the long run, for Watson, and for independent country.
Just like with Carly Pearce’s “Every Little Thing,” Aaron Watson’s “Outta Style” is less than ideal as the song to find such traction and success on country radio. But again, it could be a good means to an end. That is what we’re seeing transpire for Jon Pardi, who after seeing a few mild singles hit #1, has been given the radio green light on arguably his most traditional and best song yet, “She Ain’t In It.” After Pardi won New Artist of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards, the song continues its quick gains on the charts, going from #44 to #38 this week.
Both Carly Pearce and Aaron Watson were named this week as featured artists for CRS 2018’s New Faces of Country—an important distinction that helps an artist solidify their relationship with country radio.
In other chart news, Miranda Lambert’s “Tin Man” continues to meander at #26, dropping a spot this week, and probably getting ready to be replaced by a new single soon. Chris Stapleton’s “Broken Halos” sits at #30, and also is in no man’s land with a new album nearing release, and no real radio strategy seeming to materialize. Lambert’s The Weight of These Wings, and Stapleton’s From A Room: Vol 1 saw the greatest gains on the Country Albums charts after big moments at the CMA Awards. Lambert went from #38 to #16, and Stapleton from #11 to #5.

While I disagree that “Every Little Thing” isn’t a good song, I am genuinely happy that her music is eclipsing some of the pop drivel coming from the other female pop stars on the country charts. I didn’t know Aaron Watson’s (worst) song is climbing the charts, but it is a breath of fresh air.
November 15, 2017 @ 12:38 pm
I think “Every Little Thing” is a good song. It got a positive grade here (https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/song-review-carly-pearces-every-little-thing/). I just also think it’s decidedly more pop than country.
November 15, 2017 @ 12:45 pm
Yeah I remember reading your review. I can understand thinking it’s more pop, but compared to what is considered “country” these days, I don’t think it is. NO pop songs have a dobro haha. But compared to her growing up playing bluegrass, yes it is a little more radio friendly. I think it’s also more traditional than some of the other songs from her album.

Aaron Watson is excellent. Great to see him make some waves.
I do have to ask what this really means: “You have to ask frankly, is all the effort to get Watson this high and maintain him there worth it? ”
Aside from an independent label making a big marketing push, and perhaps not being able to sustain it in the future, what exactly would be the problem? If they’re able to put one of theirs into the mainstream, it would be nothing but a major positive, and open eyes to artists who would otherwise slip through the cracks, as far as the radio audience is concerned.

It could be because of all the songs in top 40, the only song selling worse than this is chase rice who happens to be no 40. The sales and streaming for this song is so poor that it is somewhat hard to understand why radio is literally “pushing it down people’s throat”. At 45 weeks, it is the oldest song on the chart…
This is only the fourth song since 1998 which has hit Top 20 on Country Airplay without even “bubbling under” the Hot 100.

Yes, this is a positive. I wouldn’t say that this particular Carly Pearce song is “way more pop than country,” but that’s certainly true of the album as a whole. That’s the disappointing thing, because people will go listen to album expecting to hear a substantial country album or even substantial pop-country album — but that damn busbee is mostly what they’re gonna get, not Carly.
I’m glad to see Aaron Watson do well on the chart, although I don’t understand how a song lingers around for pretty much the entirety of 2017. Didn’t it debut on the chart in January? Geeze. The song itself is not even close to being among Aaron’s best, but apparently that’s what it takes to get on the radio.

I couldn’t have said it better! “Every little thing”, “Outta style” and “She ain’t in it” are the songs I want to listen on country radios. This kind of songs are the reason of my love for Country music and makes me more eager to turn on the radio. Add to them Turnpike Troubadour’s “The HouseFire” and definitely we are on the good way for saving Country music! Good news!

Aaron Watson is “a new face in country”??!! Dudes been around a while, making albums his way, selling out shows, playing rodeos etc. Nothing new about him. Maybe they mean new to radio country. Whatever.. he’s doing great stuff. His song These ol boots should be a monster radio hit…Don’t know why that one wasn’t picked.
I will check out Carly.
November 15, 2017 @ 3:26 pm
Hehe…Aaron Watson a “new face” of country. He is (still) a new face for Nashville for sure.
Carly Pearce…well…a mediocre album. The second single will be important. There are enough bad songs on the album to end her career & there will be no “On The Verge” program to rescue an ill-fated single.
My Current Playlist:
Tom Curtain feat. Luke O’Shea – “Never Never Land”
Lee Ann Womack – “All The Trouble”
Clay Hollis – “Look Who’s Hurting Now”
Tyran Hamilton – “When I Listen To The Whiskey”
Will Day – “This Country Life”
Zach DuBois – “Proverbs To Peter”
Casey Donahew – “3 A.M.”
Jonathan Mitchell – “Forever King A Crown”
Ashley Gearing – “Love Can Go To Hell”
Heidi Parton – “Son Of A Preacher Man”
Gareth Leach – “Freeway Lines”

I appreciate these posts.
Zach Dubois is a smart, well-scrubbed Hoosier. Interesting to see how far he’ll let his writing run beyond the beige, small-pile carpet.

Radio needs to wake up. Maggie Rose and Carly are great voices for the format. It would be great if Maren Morris would release a new CD that is solid country, but I fear that a 2018 tour with a member of One Direction will make that not happen.
November 16, 2017 @ 8:46 am
Not sure about this, but I’d think Maggie Rose sacrificed a huge chunk, if not all, of her credibility with “Girl in Your Truck Song.” Maybe she could recover from that. I don’t know.
Not seeing Maren Morris releasing a country album worth a damn, though. “My Church” followed by Hero was arguably the biggest bait and switch in recent country music history.
November 15, 2017 @ 4:22 pm
“In other chart news, Miranda Lambert’s “Tin Man” continues to meander at #26, dropping a spot this week, and probably getting ready to be replaced by a new single soon.”
She was too lazy to write a chorus for “Tin Man”…
Something they call a “hook” in the biz.
The whole “wooo ooo…oooo ooo” only works if your Bruce Springsteen…wake up.
Could have been a very powerful divorce/heartbreak song that we were all expecting from her.
If only she finished the song…….lazy Miranda.
November 15, 2017 @ 5:40 pm
you make some respectable points , willie ….but here’s the thing .
I don’t care if a song fits a pre-fab pattern ( intro , verse -pre-chorus -verse-pre-chorus etc etc …)
if I’m moved by the lyric and performance . its radio that has ‘conditioned’ us to think otherwise ….to expect this or that to happen at this point in a song .sure a piece of crap song needs all the elp it can get in terms of familiarity in format and keeping a listener interested when the lyric can’t. but TIN MAN doesn’t need that kinda help …its a great lyric and a great performance of a fresh and authentic -sounding song and track . the fact that the masses need more ‘help’ gettin it should just point out , again , the kind of listener radio is targetting ..LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR ..
Tin Man works beautifully for my money …..her performance is stunning as is the power in the simplicity of arrangement .
November 15, 2017 @ 4:25 pm
Thanks for the write up on Aaron Watson. We’re very proud of what he’s accomplished over the past 18 years and 13 albums and are excited about the future! The secret to the success can be summed up in a quote from Babe Ruth: “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.”
November 15, 2017 @ 4:38 pm
I like Outta Style more than Every Little Thing it’s a little “Pardi”esque for sure. Glad they’re getting airplay though. I’ve got to give both albums more listens. They will be here playing Joe’s Live in the next few weeks so I’m looking forward to seeing them both take the stage.
Pardi/Midland/Runaway June is here taking over Chicagoland tomorrow night and Friday night. Just heard the Runaway June song “Lipstick” for the first time. It’s Country! It’s cute like them and I wouldn’t mind hearing that on the radio even if it is over produced. I’ll let you all know how these 2 shows go. I’ll expect a bum note which I don’t mind but their better be NO lip syncing!…lol
November 15, 2017 @ 4:54 pm
I wonder how Midland feels about sharing a stage with Runaway June? …..the only country or country-adjacent vocal trio out there who gives them a run for their money in the sex appeal category! : )
November 15, 2017 @ 5:11 pm
“Outta Style” is a pretty decent song, as well as “Every Little Thing”. “She Ain’t In It” is flat out fantastic! Their is a reason why Pardi and his record label (lets give credit where credit is due) chose to release the first three singles that they did. They were all decently country, but radio friendly at the same time. The result was 3 hits for Pardi and a great opportunity to release a 1 million percent PURE country song. All I have to say is hats off to them for their brilliant strategy.
November 15, 2017 @ 9:06 pm
She Ain’t In It really is an incredible song. Far and away the best song in the top 60.
November 15, 2017 @ 5:25 pm
Props for a good write up about Aaron Watson! He is unreal live.
November 15, 2017 @ 6:15 pm
Carly Pierce sucks. Every Little Thing is a pop country song, no different than all the other pop country women. Aaron Watson is pretty good, Going Out Of Style is pretty good and has a decent amount of country sound to it, but it reminds me throughly of Granger Smith. She Aint In It is doing horrible on radio, i do not see that song making it past #13 or so. Its too country for country radio, the douchebag corporate programmers cant handle something that country.
November 15, 2017 @ 7:22 pm
Congrats to them both!!!!!! And Aaron Watson’s current album Vaquero is excellent.
November 16, 2017 @ 5:09 am
Lauren Alaina has no individual style. She continued to ride in on the cost strings of others. It’s clear she wants to be a pop singer she had no business in country music at all .
November 16, 2017 @ 9:59 am
I couldn’t be happier that Aaron Watson has finally gotten the attention he deserves. He’s been making solid neo-traditional music for more than a decade now and seems like a genuinely good guy.
November 16, 2017 @ 10:31 am
Just listened to “Every Little Thing” for the first time and while it is far from terrible, it’s nothing I can get terribly excited about. Definitely pop with a bit of dobro. Now I’m streaming the album and 15 seconds into the opening track “Hide the Wine” and I am irritated already. Damn busbee and his heavy-handed pop production!
November 18, 2017 @ 2:20 pm
Interesting how dramatically fast the floor is falling out from under ‘Every Little Thing’. I think a good way to really judge if a song’s a real radio hit is how long it lingers after peaking and how fast the spins drop. That stupid Sam Hunt song took a couple of months to fall out of the top ten and even now would be barely out if it hadn’t gone recurrent. ‘Small Town Boy’ by Dustin Lynch and ‘When It Rains It Pours’ by Luke Combs are other examples of songs that stuck around after peaking.
The fact is that these labels can rig the radio system pretty well to get a song to the top but the truth comes out when the programmers just play what they should when the pressure is off.

What happened to this site? Carly Pierce is a pop singer. Why dont you write anything about real country singers anymore? Like Lucky Tubb, Joey Allcorn, Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Jake Penrod, Wayne Hancock for example.
November 21, 2017 @ 10:40 am
These comments boggle the mind. The last news story, interview, and live review anyone has ever written for Lucky Tubb were on this website, and no other outlet has written about him more. If Lucky would do something, like release an album, perhaps there would be some new news on him. Joey Allcorn has been out of music for five years. If you read the last review I did for him, you would know that. You’re asking for coverage for artists just because you want coverage for artists when there’s nothing to talk about. Every time there’s news or a new album from Wayne Hancock, it’s covered here extensively. Just like Lucky Tubb and Allcorn, nobody has written about Wayne Hancock more. I can’t tell you how many articles I’ve posted over the years on Hank Williams. I wrote FOURTEEN articles JUST on the movie release of “I Saw The Light.” What the hell am I supposed to write on a daily basis about a performer who’s been dead for over 60 years?
Jake Penrod probably does deserve more coverage here, but I’ve also mentioned him numerous times. Otherwise this is a stupid shortsighted, and ignorant comment, and anyone who’s spreading this stupid notion that Saving Country Music doesn’t cover real country singers anymore is being irresponsible. Why did you pass over two stories on Mel Tillis, a story on Mike and the Moonpies to leave this comment here? It’s because you’d rather find things to be pissed off about as opposed to enjoying exactly what you’re bellyaching for, and for FREE.
You’re welcome.

I saw Carly play at Joe’s Live last night. She has a great voice, good stage presence, and is absolutely adorable……..can I still say that in this day and age? The one thing she didn’t come across as is “Country” but her album is poppy so it is what it is. She has that “Underwood” thing going for her which is ok but Lambert, Musgraves, or Morris she ain’t and probably won’t ever be.
Aaron Watson will be here in a couple weeks. I’ve been listening to his current setlist so I’m looking forward to it.
