Cody Jinks Releases New Song, and Wave of Confusion
On May 24th, Saving Country Music posted an article titled “Expect The Unexpected From The Upcoming Cody Jinks Release.” On September 6th, we discovered that wasn’t just the regular hyperbole that usually precedes a new album.
Ahead of his new album After The Fire to be released on October 11th, Cody Jinks has released a new song called “Same Kind Of Crazy As Me” (listen below). Populated via streaming services at midnight Friday (9-5), it’s the first taste of new music from Cody since his 2018 record Lifers.
However, “Same Kind of Crazy” was not one of the 10 songs listed on the After The Fire track list released on August 12th via an official press release. This was the first indication that something was strange. Also, the cover art for the new track looked more indicative of the banner on top of the Cody Jinks Facebook page that showed the eyes of a wolf over a white background, and not the more earthy cover art of a fire that adorns the After The Fire cover.
Incidentally, the new banner adorning Cody’s social media pages now says, “Some Days A Raven,” and looks very similar to the “Same Kind of Crazy As Me” motif, meaning a predominately white background. “Some Days A Raven” isn’t in the track list of the announced album After The Fire either.
Even more strange, a Cody Jinks album named The Wanting appeared as a pre-order via Amazon UK recently, along with a release date of October 18th—the week after the confirmed release of After The Fire. That track list also doesn’t include a song called “Some Days A Raven,” but it does include the song “Same Kind of Crazy As Me” that was just released.
Completely confused yet? That may be the entire point of all of this. What Saving Country Music can confirm is that nothing that has happened here with the release of “Same Kind of Crazy As Me” was by accident. Sometimes the metadata of a track gets filled out incorrectly or some other mishaps happens, and it populates accidentally. That appears to not be the case here. Does that mean we will be getting two Cody Jinks records instead of one? Perhaps that’s a possibility, but at the moment, the release of a second album called The Wanting has NOT been confirmed. It may be confirmed at some point, but hasn’t been at the moment. It appears more still may need to be revealed for all the puzzle pieces to fit together.
So the ultimate answer here is that there is not an answer, at least yet, and the Cody Jinks camp should be taken at its word to “expect the unexpected.” Cody Jinks even further confused people of Friday by saying on social media that he’s heading back into the studio in December. That appears to be true too. How that ties into all of this is anyone’s guess at this point. In the interim, the best course of action is to sit back and enjoy the new song “Same Kind of Crazy As Me” and wait for the next shoe to fall.
Stay tuned.

Was also available as an Amazon (U.S.) pre-order this morning. I did so at 11:45 a,m. EDT and received Amazon’s emailed confirmation. Now, although it is still showing in my order history, the listing for “The Wanting” has disappeared from Amazon’s website (which I know had happened by dinnertime). Expect the unexpected, CJ said…

Curve balls from the Moonpies and now Jinks. I love it. One of the reasons indie country (for lack of a better term) has become my favorite genre in the last few years.
The artists know their fans are hungry and loyal, and side stepping the mainstream industry machine gives artists the freedom, means, and incentive to experiment with release schedules and treat fans to new music more quickly and in more meaningful ways. It’s been a really fun ride with country music for me this year.

This is the kind of song I love from this guy. His ability to write songs that tell the story of the forlorn common man is nothing short of amazing to me. More of this, please.

I was just thinking the exact opposite. This type of song is the most boring from Jinks IMO, and is a complete waste of his vocal talent. Give me more of “She’s All Mine” – type real country from Jinks, and less of this / Lifers style stuff.

Worth noting too the original release date for After the Fire was October 5th and only recently changed to the 11th

Good tune I only have one criticism but it’s a big one. I feel like I’ve already heard jinks song this song a few times.
But….I also think that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I also thought it was funny that he said he was itching to get back into the studio…before his new LP has even been released?! Recently saw him for the first time. He was awesome. Love this new one.

The Wanting showed up on Amazon’s US site briefly but has since disappeared. I was able to preorder it before it was removed. We’ll see what happens.

But the icing on the cake is:
Charlie Worsham feat. Old Crow Medicine Show – “I Hope I’m Stoned” (When Jesus Takes Me Home”
Not bad: Ronnie Dunn – “Amarillo By Morning”

I swear Deryl Dodd has been repackaging the same 10 songs from early in his career for what feels like forever now. Don’t get me wrong, Bitter End is a great song (with and without Rogers), but it would be nice to hear some new material from him.

I agree, and it sets up several questions, first whether pulling it from Amazon was strategic or a genuine mistake (TBD). But I wonder what Amazon’s position on artists/management/consultants playing hide-and-go-seek for ‘buzz’ purposes actually is? Taken to the extreme, it could become chaotic if fans couldn’t quite count on new releases staying on Amazon’s site. Maybe Amazon would be concerned they’d order elsewhere? I dunno…I’m just thinking out loud…

My preacher said to expect two albums this morning. He didn’t elaborate on where he got this information but, he’s obviously connected, he knows Jesus!
Disclaimer that it was clearly just tenuously supported speculation on his part but, nonetheless, I’m happy to learn the preacher is a Cody Jinks fan. I’ve found it difficult to trust men of the cloth in the past on account of their frequent abandonment of the amazing bluegrass/Appalachian/traditional southern hymns in favor of contemporary Christian music. Glad to know my church isn’t in danger of such a silly move being made as the preacher clearly has good taste in music.
Oddly, Cody Jinks getting “clever” doesn’t fill me with dread the same way many of my other favorite artists do when they make similar statements. He’s gonna make music I enjoy. I couldn’t be more confident of that if lifers is his “bad album.” I wish it was my “bad album.” Hell, I wish it was my best album. Double the amount of good music I expected is the type of surprise we can probably expect from Cody. I’m team Kentucky generally speaking but, he’s really difficult to not appreciate.

I have a screenshot of Josh Morningstar’s ig post that was later deleted…the last song on The Wanting looks to be titled The Raven and the Dove…in his ig post the edges of the photo were cut off so it actually looks like The Raven and the Do…Josh said he had a hand in six songs on Jinks’ upcoming records and had 3 marked on each record.

I wish jinks would go back to his production team from Adobe sessions. That album sounded so much better than anything since. I’ve heard better sounding albums on a shoestring budget, which does a major disservice to Cody’s music.

I don’t get what people have against Lifers – it’s pure country and terrific.

I liked Lifers, but the reason I didn’t love it as much as I did “I’m Not the Devil” is that it ain’t “pure country.” Too many rock beats.

It’s painfully obvious Jinks is spent song wise. Uninspired, generic junk. It’s simply amazing how far he’s fallen from the apex of Adobe Sessions.

Love how Cody doesn’t over think it and just keeps recording music. As written in many of his songs, he doesn’t care about acceptance or money; he’s on this planet to play music so that’s what he does. Very refreshing in a day of the over managed music business. Wish we could say the same for other country artist out there….

Judging by his Spotify artist page, it’s definitely two albums. His artist landing page currently has a banner hyping his album coming out “October 11th & ?”.

No matter what happens with this, you better get ready to spend the rest of the year inundated with the new Highwomen album. Variety has already called it “the best country album in years,” and the rest of the mainstream press who don’t really know anything about country music can’t be far behind in falling all over themselves to pontificate and fawn all over this.
Now, I’m not saying it’s not a good album – I streamed it over Apple this weekend, and it’s good stuff. But when it comes to pure country, I’d put the latest releases by Cody, Tyler, and the Moonpies ahead easily.

Just updating everyone, since “confusion” was the operative word a few days ago…
It’s 9/10, and both After the Fire and The Wanting are full albums and available for pre-order on Cody’s website. You can also see the tracklists for both albums there, too. And judging from the dates the pre-order CDs will ship out, it appears the release dates will be 10/11 and 10/18, respectively.
(Trigger, maybe update this article with the new info?)

Personally, I’m glad the first album has been moved back to 10/11. The two weeks before that––10/4 and (especially!) 9/27––are absolutely stacked. This will spread the wealth a bit. Some good music coming up.. cheers y’all!
