Hank Jr. Should be in Hall of Fame, Whether He Wants It Or Not
On Hank Williams Jr.’s last album, 2016’s It’s About Time, there is a song written by Bocephus himself called, “Just Call Me Hank.” In the song, the 2nd generation country legend addresses a concern that many of his long-time fans have, and even some country listeners who enjoy his music from afar look upon with puzzlement. How in the world can a man who won two CMA Entertainer of the Year awards, three ACM Entertainer of the Year awards, sold 70 million albums, had 13 #1 albums, 10 #1 singles, and carried the most iconic name in country music into a new era still not be in the most important institution in country music, the Country Music Hall of Fame?
Don’t call me an icon, I don’t care about the Hall of Fame
Just gonna live my life in my country boy kinda way….
…says Hank Jr. in “Just Call Me Hank.” Other people who claim to have intimate knowledge about Hank Jr.’s state of mind on his continued snubbing by the Hall of Fame say that even if they did induct him at this point, he wouldn’t acknowledge the accolade, and wouldn’t show up to the announcement or the induction ceremony. He may even tell the Hall of Fame to stick their induction where the sun don’t shine.
But it doesn’t matter if Hank Williams Jr. wants to be in the Country Music Hall of Fame or not. What matters is if he belongs there, which he does. One of the reasons why Hank Jr. likely doesn’t care if the Hall of Fame honors him or not is because he’s the most obvious snubbing in the institution’s history, and he’s rightfully cheesed off. And whether Hank Jr. truly doesn’t care, or if he’s feigning carelessness simply as a way to take the power out of the Hall of Fame’s hands and put it back into his own, it should not weigh into the decision of the secret committee that decides who to put in the Hall of Fame each year. Their job is to induct the most qualified candidate, and Hank Jr. so clearly leads the pack in qualifications, it’s not even worth discussing.
A committee appointed by the Country Music Association nominates three new inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame each year. There is one Modern Era candidate, one Veteran’s Era candidate, and one rotating category for songwriters, musicians, and non performers. Hank Jr. should have been a shoo-in via the Modern Era category a decade ago or more. Now that he’s graduated to the extremely overcrowded field in the Veterans Era category, it may be impossible for him to get in during his lifetime, just like it will be for the backlog of country legends waiting for induction, many who are on death’s door. According to rumors, Hank Jr. wasn’t even on the final ballot for the 2019 inductions, meaning the most qualified individual for induction isn’t even being considered at this point.
READ: How Are Artists Inducted Into the Country Music Hall of Fame?
If the Hall of Fame Committee is concerned how it will look if Bocephus doesn’t show up to their festivities, they’re inducting artists in the the Hall of Fame for all the wrong reasons. They should be worried about how it looks that he’s not in there, and how it calls into question the legitimacy of the entire institution that one of the most successful and best-selling artists of all time is not included. Only two other country artists that ever won the CMA Entertainer of the Year and are otherwise eligible for the Hall of Fame have yet to be inducted—Charlie Rich and John Denver (who have their own little history together), and they both only won it once.
Waylon Jennings didn’t show up for his Hall of Fame induction ceremony either, and as devout Hank Jr. fans will attest, Hank Jr. looked up to Waylon more than anyone. Over in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, numerous artists have stood the institution up upon induction. The Sex Pistols told the Rock Hall to piss off in 2006. Axl Rose famously dissed the induction of the Guns N’ Roses original lineup in 2012. But can you imagine the Rock Hall without these two iconic bands being included? More recently, the mild-mannered Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits didn’t show up in 2018, and in 2019, only two members of Radiohead attended their induction.
That’s not to excuse the petty, arrogant, and disrespectful move of not attending your own Hall of Fame induction. An arrogant attitude is likely the reason that Hank Williams Jr. is annually overlooked by the Hall of Fame, and for sure, Bocephus has become a polarizing character in the latter part of his career that has put him behind the 8 ball for all sorts of accolades and attention. But the body of work speaks for itself. There is nobody more qualified for the Country Music Hall of Fame that isn’t in, and there are many that are in the Hall of Fame that Hank Williams Jr. is significantly more qualified than. If Monday Night Football can make ammends with Bocephus, then country music most certainly can.
When people walk through the Hall of Fame rotunda and look at the plaques on the wall, they should be struck by awe at the talent displayed. But often, they’re dumbfounded by the amount of no name label executives who have made it while artists like Hank Jr. are still waiting in the wings. The Hall of Fame rotunda should also act like a guidepost for future generations to the artists that shepherded country music from the back porches of Appalachia and the early stages of the Grand Ole Opry to the packed stadiums of today. Nobody had a bigger hand in pushing the music to the heights it enjoys today than Hank Williams Jr.

I am in Nashville for a few days right now. I went to the CMHF yesterday. Walking into that rotunda is almost the same feeling of going into church. I watch the crowd. Everyone had their favorite plaques. It seems everyone was drawn to the beloved Minnie Pearl. Sadly, I heard some passers by who looked up at some of the plaques and would say, “Who’s that” or “I’ve never heard of them”. Being a die hard true country fan, I was somewhat shocked. But in reality the general public is not going to know who Uncle Dave Macon, Rod Brasfield, Pop Stoneman or Vernon Dalhart are. As for me I begin to think of this missing plaques. Not the “borderline” candidates either. Hank, Jr., was at the top of the list. When Garth, Reba, Ricky, Vince, Alan, Randy and soon to be Brooks & Dunn, all have plaques and Hank, Jr. does not, it’s beyond travesty. To me other glaring omissions are early star Bradley Kincaid, Stringbean, Stonewall Jackson, Archie Campbell, The Wilburn Brothers, and a few bluegrass acts, The Stanley Brothers and The Osborne Brothers. But yes, Jr. is the big missing star. Maybe it will happen soon.

David B,
Hank, Jr. has told people that he doesn’t care if he gets in the Hall of Fame or not and that if he does get elected, he will not show up for the induction announcement, so that’s why he wasn’t considered as a finalist for induction into the Hall of Fame this year.
As I’ve said it before, these were supposedly the finalists for the Hall of Fame this year in the Veterans and Modern categories and there were 7 finalists in each category this year and they were:
Veterans Era: Crystal Gayle, Mickey Gilley, The Osborne Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, The Stanley Brothers, Ray Stevens and The Wilburn Brothers.
Modern Era: Brooks & Dunn, Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers, The Judds, Marty Stuart, Tanya Tucker, Steve Wariner and Keith Whitley.
What do you think?.
CeeCeeBee
May 18, 2019 @ 11:38 am
Glad to see Steve Wariner on that list.
As Trigger points out in this article, it doesn’t matter what Hank does or does not want. At this point, his exclusion is a real hit to the credibility of the HoF as an institution.
It reminds me a bit of Terrell Owens in the NFL. His personal history and professional conduct made many uncomfortable selecting him for the HoF. At the end of the day though, his career achievements DEMANDED he be included. Owens didn’t show up for his induction, but that didn’t mean it was the wrong decision.
Same thing with Hank, they don’t have to LIKE him, but refusing to recognize him hurts the Hall more than it hurts him.
As for his statements that he doesn’t care and wouldn’t go if they did induct him, I don’t know, the honor may soften him and change his mind. Jon Bon Jovi yelled for years that the Rock & Roll hall was BS and if they inducted Bon Jovi he wouldn’t bother to show…but there he was in Cleveland a couple years ago basking in the glory and giving the most egomaniacal, self grandising speech in the history of the HoF.

All of these statements are valid arguments….the Hall of Fame people who decides who gets in and doesn’t are just not wanting to admit their wrongs and ignorance to exclude royalty!!! There should be more artists inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame each year so they can catch up and put the the artists who should be in there but are not. I find it hard to believe that the following artists are not in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Hank Williams Jr, Johnny Paycheck, George Hamilton IV, Slim Whitman, Wynn Stewart, David Allan Coe, Stonewall Jackson, The Wilburn Brothers, Gram Parsons, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Osborne Brothers, Jan Howard, Tommy Collins, Lloyd Green, The Stanley Brothers, Ralph Stanley as a solo act like Roy Rogers as a member of The Sons of the Pioneers and as a solo artist. And the list of artists goes on and on. One of the main instruments associated with country music is the steel guitar but there are no steel players in the Country Music Hall of Fame unless you count Barbara Mandrell who also plays a steel guitar.

People like to shit on Bocephus now but albums like “Habits Old and New” and “Whiskey Bent and Hellbound” are some of the finest ever made. It’s a shame he’s not a member of the Hall of Fame, and a shame that he wasn’t inducted the first year he was eligible. Sadly he will almost certainly die before he gets inducted.

Here’s my take on the subject. If he’s nominated, great. If he’s elected into the CMHF, and declines, then we should honor his decision. We should, however, shower him with the accolades and respect that he so richly deserves. As to the general public’s ignorance of such legends as Rod Brasfield, DeFord Bailey, Stonewall Jackson, and others, I hold the record companies, the ACMs, and the CMAs wholly responsible. They should have been the ones educating the public on the history of country music, both good and bad.

Your comment is bit silly regarding Hank, Sr. and his Hall of Fame induction. The CMA was not established until 1957, a few years after Hank died, therefore it was impossible for him to be inducted into the Hall during his lifetime. Hank, Sr. was one of the first THREE original inductees when the honor was established in 1961, along with Fred Rose and Jimmie Rodgers, so I think Hank Sr. received his due respect from the CMA.

(Un-)popular Opinion: Tanya Tucker first. A star for 45+ years, the trouble, the comeback, the unique voice, the awards, gold & platinum records, 10 #1 singles + 30 Top 10 tracks, international success (5 #1 singles in Canada)…& i’m pretty sure Tanya Tucker will be a (proud) member of the Hall.
Talking about membership or inductees…Tania Kernaghan, Felicity Urquhart & Beccy Cole should be on the Roll of Renown. The highest honor for australasian country music artists.

Hank probably realizes that the CMA is an illegitimate organization, ran by the kind of city shysters that were taking advantage of his dad 70 years ago.
If we lived in an imaginary world, where the CMHOF was actually a representation of the real culture of C(c)ountry Music, and the beautiful, primitive world that created it, then yes, Hank should get in. But we don’t, and it’s not, so it doesn’t matter either way.

The Hall of Fame seriously damaged it’s credibility this year when they selected Ray Stevens over a host of more deserving candidates (Hank Jr. included.
The secrecy of the process, the exclusion of clearly worthy artists, the politics…. It’s all such a mess.
As I have said before, they need to open up the veterans category to more than one honoree per year. At this rate, so many “modern day” artists are going to be veterans soon and that will push the current veterans even further back in the line.
anna
May 19, 2019 @ 6:12 am
If the previously cited list of finalists is correct, I suspect having three brother acts on the final ballot in the Veteran’s category likely split the vote, hence Ray Stevens being able to slip through with probably a very small majority of the votes. The Stanleys and Wilburn Bros. have been strong contenders for years. The voting members weren’t thinking this years when they added that third brothers act, the Osborne Bros. They should have know votes would be split, especially with two bluegrass acts in play for the honor. Throw in a little politicking on behalf of Stevens and we have a fairly clear idea of how that category went down.

It’s a joke that Hank Hr. Is not in the Counrty music hall if fame when other less talented singers are in ther. George Strsit along with Garth Brooks are the biggest frauds in country music. All strait is is an overpriced cover singer and he’s in CMH of F. Hank Hr. Is the real definition of an artist and the hall would rather honour phonics. Hank Jr. should be in the country music hall if fame and the rock and roll hall of fans like his father and Johnny cash
Chris
May 19, 2019 @ 2:17 pm
George Strait doesn’t write his own songs, for the most part, but so what? Did Patsy Cline? Does Charley Pride? Should people who have great voices but who aren’t great songwriters just give up on a musical career and go work in an office? I don’t see why they should.
George Strait is no fraud – he doesn’t present himself as anything other than what he is i.e. a damn good country singer and he’s been helping keep this music alive for nearly 40 years now. Hank Jr’s a legend, no doubt about it, but so’s George.
Richard Fox
May 20, 2019 @ 1:53 pm
Like I said, George strait is jus an overpriced cover singer with good looks. Went to his show once, it was the most boring concert I ever went to. The opening act was more entertaining than him. Strait ain’t in the same class as Hank Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris.
Another thing, George Jones sang other people’s songs (though he did write) but he made those songs his own, I’ll take George Jones over Stait any day, Jones was way better entertainer than Strait. King if country my ass

Hard to figure their rationale here.
Lack of stylistic purity? Previous inductees include countrypolitan artists, as well as those with rock or bluegrass leanings.
Private life marred by vices or moral failings? Plenty of that in the Hall already.
Not PC enough? I’ll bet nearly all the current members held views which would trigger the various contemporary snowflakes into meltdowns.
If you traced this fissure back to its origin, might it boil down to Jr’s audacity to move on from doing covers of Sr’s songs? I figure the powers that be simply don’t like him, and don’t even remember why anymore.
anna
May 19, 2019 @ 2:19 pm
I don’t think Hank Jr. moving away from his dad’s music has anything to do with why he isn’t in the Hall. Hank Jr. hitting the trail with the Drifting Cowboys in the 1960s and doing his dad’s material was primarily Miss Audrey’s idea in order to continue to reap the do-re-mi off her dead ex-husband’s incredible legacy. Nobody in the industry or the nominating committee begrudges an artist who wants to step out from his or her famous parent’s shadow and carve a different type of musical career for themselves. Honestly, most of the industry folks who knew Hank Sr. or were involved in the early days of Hall of Fame voting are pretty much all dead. If numerous current industry folks are dominating the nominating committee, my guess is most are unaware of Jr.’s contributions. Too many half-baked misconceptions and pseudo-conspiracy theories are out there regarding Jr.’s absence from the Hall. Not quite sure why Jr. hasn’t made the cut but I really don’t think it is as dark or nefarious as some folks think.

All u can say is the CMHF has no credibility with me when Hank Jr. with all his credentials can’t get elected in. He’s the real deal with his singing, songwriting and the ability to play any instrument. He should of been elected in 20 years ago. He proved himself when he reinvented himself after mountain fall accident when everyone doubted him. Hank Jr. has been criticized for years but he keeps doing what he does best, entertaining. Hank Jr. should be in both the CMHF and the Rock and Roll Hall of fame as does Jerry Lee Lewis, his mentor.

Very unpopular opinion: I don’t think Whitely is HOF-worthy. He had a stellar voice, yes. but not a better voice than George Jones, Milsap, Hank Sr, Cash, Tammy, Loretta, or a couple dozen other vocalists that come to mind. His body of work is too small. Yes, Patsy and Hank Sr had similarly small bodies of work, but they had a huge influence, and I, unlike most who post opinions here about Whitley, do not agree that he had a legendary influence on the music or on future artists. I’m not signing with my real name because Whitley lovers are kind of mean when this gets brought up.
