10:27 – This felt like a very weird CMA Awards. Overall, there were way more legends, and way more talented artists performing, while the denizens of Bro-Country weren’t even invited. Tributing women was a good theme choice for the CMAs. Everything was in place to have a great night. But the presentation just felt flat throughout. The jokes fell flat, some of the performances sounded washed out, the teleprompters were on the fritz, and it just failed to find any positive momentum. Arguably the best performance was by Pink of all people, and Kelsea Ballerini. The collaborations were often too busy to find a “moment” that gave you goosebumps. There were many fine performances, but few that will be memorable. Social media chatter was super light.
As for the winners, there will be a lot of disappointment that Eric Church nor Carrie Underwood won for Entertainer of the Year, and Garth did yet again. It’s hard to say Garth did not deserve it, but only Garth and his very closest fans wanted him to win. Everyone else was rooting for someone else. Luke Combs gets two big awards, and like Garth said, will be vying for Entertainer of the Year in the coming years. Kacey Musgraves was a surprise for Female Vocalist, and will receive few complaints except from Carrie Underwood fans, who were left with nothing to celebrate tonight. And Lil Nas X did ended up showing up, but didn’t take the stage. Maren Morris is who they are grooming as the woman for the future in country, but the problem is she isn’t country. There’s a lot to unpack with these awards.
It’s great that they paid tribute to women, but we also want to push forward the women who tribute country music. Kacey Musgraves said, “I Love country music,” and those words mean something. Carrie Underwood is the epitome of pop country, but she’s always shown respect to the genre and its institutions. If women are going to find their fair share in mainstream country music in the future, it’s going to take more than 30-second token performances and tributes on award shows. But country music at least showed that it cares, and it’s listening.
10:12 – THANK YOU to everyone for following along, sharing, and commenting! I’m going to give some final quick thoughts, recap the winners, and call it a night.
10:08 – I’m really surprised Garth did not have more self-awareness in that situation, and understand the night was supposed to be about celebrating women. Remember, in 1996, Garth Brooks won Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, and turned down the trophy because he felt Hootie and the Blowfish deserved it. He tried to turn down his Hall of Fame induction until Keith Whitley and Randy Travis got in.
That said, if you judge Entertainer of the Year as a touring award, Garth deserved it, and better it go to him than Keith Urban.
10:03 – I hate to say I told you so, but when I first made my predictions for Entertainer of the Year, I believed it was between Carrie Underwood and Garth. I thought momentum was well behind Carrie during the voting period, but as we seem to say every year, Entertainer of the Year is a touring award now, and that’s why Garth won. Eric Church never had a chance, and didn’t want it, in my opinion.
9:59 – Garth Brooks doesn’t even mention Carrie Underwood. He mentions Kelsea Ballerini, and Luke Combs, and Reba McEntire while hugging the award like a baby. Let the think pieces ripping apart misogynistic country music begin.
9:57 – WINNER – The 2019 CMA Entertainer of the Year is Garth Brooks.
9:55 – Slightly surprising, but hard to not say it’s deserved for Kacey Musgraves to win Female Vocalist. With the success she had with ‘Golden Hour,’ it has placed her in the top tier of country women, and now she will forever be remembered as the top woman in mainstream country in 2019.
9:54 – Sorry folks, Willie knocked out the site for a sec. Folks are really worried about Willie’s health. Back to full speed now!
9:52 – WINNER – Kacey Wins Female Vocalist of the Year. “I love country music,” she says.
9:42 – It’s okay to say it folks. Willie Nelson didn’t sound good, and really struggled. He’s 86-years-old, and has breathing issues. We should still all be thankful for every second we get to spend with him on this mortal coil.
P.S. Server is starting to get swampy. So please be patient if you have connectivity issues.
9:41 – Kacey and Willie proving even Kermit the Frog is more country than Sam Hunt.
9:39 – I’m getting baked just watching this Willie Nelson / Kacey Musgraves performance.
9:37 – WINNER – The CMA for Male Vocalist of the Year goes to Luke Combs.
9:36 – That’s Eric Church’s common co-writer and solo artist Jeff Hyde. Eric always shares his spotlight on these shows.
9:35- A little disappointed Eric Church isn’t performing his current and excellent single “Monsters,” but this performance is pretty great. Notice how some of the best performances are when all the overproduction is stripped away, and you allow an artist to have a “moment.”
9:33 – The Album of the Year field was really weak this year, and that gave Maren Morris the easy route to a win. Don’t mean any disrespect to the legacy of her producer busbee, but it didn’t deserve a trophy.
9:29 – Your “tribute” is one song? No wonder Kristofferson didn’t cancel his club date to be there for their 2-minute, 45-second token.
9:27 – Thank goodness they put Chris Janson on the blues harp for this tribute. Kris Kristofferson doesn’t know who the hell he is.
9:26 – Digging this rendition of “Me and Bobby McGee” in tribute to Kris Kristofferson. John Osborne and Joe Walsh can shred, and Dierks and Sheryl Crow are doing it justice.
9:25 – Sheryl Crow had to cancel two other appearances at tributes tonight to perform this Kris Kristofferson tribute. She also just flew into Nashville today after another tribute yesterday, and will be leaving right after this performance for two more tributes.
9:21 – Maren Morris does not deserve the COUNTRY Music Association Album of the Year. It might be a fine pop record, but there’s not a shred of anything country on that title. When Kacey Musgraves won last year, it was a deserved recognition for a woman who had devoted her life to country music. Maren Morris doesn’t care about country. She sees it as a burden, and it’s an insult to the actual women of country to give her that award.
9:20 – WINNER – The CMA for Album of the Year goes to “GIRL” by Maren Morris.
9:19 – Bobby Bones is the greatest DJ in country music. Just ask him.
9:15 – The only reason this “We Were” song is even half decent is because it was written by Eric Church and is being played on a nice ass vintage Martin. Otherwise, I wish they would deport Keith Urban post haste and send him back with the Koala bears. Such an embarrassment he’s the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year.
9:12 – So I missed it, but according to For The Birds and CeeCeeBee in the comments section, Brothers Osborne shot Blake Shelton a look when Miranda Lambert sung, “drunk dialed your ex-husband” during “It All Comes Out in the Wash.”
9:10 – Dolly Parton getting religious on us!
9:08 – Dolly singing “Have a Little Faith in Me” solo now. This is what we needed! Written by John Hiatt, by the way. Great stuff.
9:05 – No offense to these new Dolly collabs, but I would have preferred her rip through one of her classics.
9:03 – Save us Dolly!
9:01 – Thomas Rhett just doesn’t raise the pulse whatsoever. I might as well be watching grass growing. It’s Wonder Bread served with tap water. It’s not even distinct enough to get angry about.
9:00 – One more hour!
8:57 – MVP of the night so far, the Blanco Brown murse.
8:56 – Maren Morris did a fine job in her performance. Maybe one of the better vocal performances of the night. But 100% pop. Pink was more country, and still probably has the performance to beat. Sad commentary on the state of country.
8:53 – Blake Shelton is a tool, but I don’t totally hate “God’s Country.” Cool little cameo by CMA Musician of the Year Jenee Fleenor. All the audio feels washed out though, taking the mustard out of all of these performances.
8:51 – In my mind, I’m visualizing Mike and the Moonpies jumping out of the crowd to kick Old Dominion’s ass. Yes, I’m that shallow. But damn if Mike and the Moonpies ain’t badass.
8:50 – WINNER – Old Dominion wins for Vocal Group of the Year.
8:49 – Morgan Wallen looks like an asshole on your front stoop looking to date your daughter. Meanwhile Cody Johnson shows us the first bona fide cowboy hat all night.
8:47 – My OCD going crazy during this Maren Morris performance. “Someone’s going to have to pick up all of those flowers!” Actually, it’s probably just one big carpet.
8:46 – If Maren Morris doesn’t win anything tonight, she’s going to flash her side boob on Instagram in protest, and then tongue lash us all for objectifying her for looking.
8:44 – Wow, they actually acknowledged the Hall of Fame inductees this year.
8:42 – Thanks to everyone commenting below! Reading when I can!
8:40 – One thing to be thankful for this year, NO Sam Hunt, NO Florida Georgia Line, NO Jason Aldean, NO Luke Bryan. Just think about that for a second, and we got performances from Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn, and Dolly, Willie, and others coming up. We are truly moving on from the Bro-Country era.
8:37 – This Brooks & Dunn / Brothers Osborne mashup is a little too rock and frenetic for me. Would have enjoyed more twang from this pairing. But at least it’s got some energy.
8:35 – Save us Brooks & Dunn!
8:33 – Jerry Douglas should have walked off stage halfway of that train wreck, flipping double birds over his shoulder.
8:31 – Um, this Halsey chick can’t sing on tune. At all. Woof woof!
8:30 – Lady Antebellum is a musical sedative. They are the pumpkin spice-scented candle of country.
8:29 – Again, Halsey will get more face time here with Lady Antebellum than New Artist of the Year Ashley McBryde did.
8:26 – Man. The presentation feels a little wonky tonight, teleprompters are clearly running behind, and there is NO pulse behind this event on social media. Not sure if it’s due to impeachment proceedings or something else, but this entire thing is just feeling flat at the moment. Let’s hope the 2nd half gets some lifeblood behind it.
8:25 – Dan + Shay just won a duo award over BROOKS & DUNN!! If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to suspend this Saving Country Music CMA Awards LIVE blog to go flip some cars downtown.
8:23 – Dan + Shay suck.
8:23 – WINNER – The CMA for Vocal Duo of the Year goes to Dan + Shat … I mean Shay, SHAY! (sorry, dad joke).
8:22 – Wow, Midland is pure shit in their presentation. “You had ONE task!”
8:20 – “Girl Crush” feels a little dated, but not yet classic. But I thought this was a great way to showcase these women’s talent.
8:19 – Lindsey Ell can rip on the guitar when she wants. Cool they also are flashing up the names of the performers as they work through this multi-artist performance of Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush.” This feels much more organic than the opening medley.
8:17 – A more mature song from Kelsea. Not entirely opposed to that performance.
8:16 – Looked from the comp to the TV, and could swear Kelsea Ballerini was performing topless.
8:15 – Man, these monologue jokes are bad. Timing is bad. Love these women, but they needed more rehearsal and better writers or something.
8:13 – Midland and Cody Johnson would have also been good picks for New Artist of the Year. It was a stacked category. But I think it means more to Ashley McBryde than it would have to either of those two. Cody Johnson isn’t “new,” and Midland is doing fine.
8:09 – Luke Combs is 29, balding rapidly, pushing over 300, and could drag just about anything out of any Nashville bar he wanted. Music is an amazing thing.
8:07 – It’s amazing what Luke Combs can achieve with a chicken leg permanently lodged in his aorta.
8:06 – Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone” is fine, and she killed it as always. Just a little too loungy for my taste. But a solid performance.
8:01 – Ashley McBryde’s acceptance speech and about meeting John Prine. “He said, ‘You’re real good. You’re no Reba. But you’re real good.’ I cherish those little moments that are like that, that are truth and guidance from voices that we respect and admire. And I’m thankful for that and for this, and for the opportunity to step up. Thank you.”
7:57 – Apropos that Old Dominion played in front of an empty hall. That’s exactly what would happen if they had to make it on talent as opposed to gerrymandered radio play.
7:56 – I’d wish for all Old Dominion fans to be stricken with gonorrhea, but chances are I’m too late.
7:55 – HUGE win for Ashley McBryde, a woman of country that deserves way more attention! Great speech too!
7:54 – WINNER – The 2019 CMA for New Artist of the Year goes to Ashley McBryde!
7:52 – Jim Gaffigan has a front butt.
7:50 – …that said, this Pink song is better than 90% of the stuff on country radio, and Chris Stapleton is proving why he’s not just a bearded anomaly, his a generational singer with an incredibly soulful voice that blends well with anything. The best performance of the night so far. Simple and classy.
7:48 – So for context here, this Pink song is a Pinks’s current single, not a country single. Not sure why she gets a full performance slot, when someone like Ashley McBryde, The Highwomen, Maddie & Tae, or someone else could have received one. I get you have to attract non country fans, but she could have sung on a country artist’s single.
7:43 – So I guess Reba McEntire isn’t worth any production behind her performance like everyone else. Just a prerecorded track and the default stage setup. She sounded great though.
7:41 – Absolutely love Reba, and “Fancy” is an iconic song. But this performance feels a little weird. Where’s the band? Do like the strip poker costume changes. Let’s just hope we don’t get down to layer five.
7:39 – The wireless mic is always a little awkward.
7:37 – Fine performance by Miranda Lambert, but felt a little perfunctory. Would have preferred to seen one of her better “Wildcard” songs, but smart to perform the single.
7:34 – “If you throw your salad at the couple at the next table and hightail it before the cops arrive… Don’t sweat it…”
7:30 – “Beautiful Crazy” is a very mild song. But at least Blake Shelton didn’t double up on the song awards. “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves was the only better option, but at least it won for Video of the Year.
7:29 – WINNER – The CMA Song of the Year goes to “Beautiful Crazy” by Luke Combs.
7:28 – Lol. Shot of Luke Combs chewing bubblegum, bored out of his gourd after Dan + Shay.
7:27 – During the Sugarland hiatus, Jennifer Nettles has been using her voice as a Class B industrial strength paint remover.
7:25 – Just sayin’ …
7:24 – There was a spread in Billboard today literally touting Dan + Shay as “boyfriend country.” Perhaps that’s why I don’t get their music because I don’t have a boyfriend.
7:23 – I am a professional country music writer person. Dan + Shay has been around for seven years, and have had six #1 songs on country radio and counting. I still can’t tell you which one is which. That is how forgettable they are.
7:21 – As a whole, I think the opening montage in tribute to country music women was really cool and well done. I just think the real way to support women is to give them full performance slots and let them have a “moment” as opposed to 30 seconds. It was a little too frantic for my taste when it comes to actual performances, but each woman did the best with the short time she was given.
7:18 – Blake mentions Earl Thomas Conley, who passed away this year. Say what you want about Shelton, he’s been a big supporter of Earl’s legacy for years.
7:17 – Yay! Let’s support country women! Now here’s an award for Blake Shelton!
7:17 – WINNER – The CMA for Single of the Year goes to Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country.”
7:11 – Dolly mentioned Brad Paisley, who got inched out this year after 11 years of hosting with Carrie Underwood. Apparently he’s on vacation tonight.
7:10 – “Dolly’s rack is so much bigger,” Carrie Underwood cracks! HA! Dolly Parton has big Boobs!
7:08 – Sarah Evans sang something, now Martina McBride is singing “Independence Day” as all the women join in. Terri Clark is up there too. Truth is Pink will get more screen time than any of those women just did.
7:06 – Gretchen Wilson sings “Redneck Woman,” and then Crystal Gayle comes out to sing “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” These 30 second quick hit performances feel more like tokenism than allowing any performance the opportunity to breathe and for any of these artists to have a moment. The Millennials can’t even Google the names quick enough to figure out who these women are.
7:04 – Highwomen singing Tammy Wynette’s “Good Girls Gonna Go Bad.” Pretty damn cool to see someone like Amanda Shires on national television. Then Tanya Tucker comes out and sings a bar of “Delta Dawn.”
7:03 – Loretta Lynn! She in the front row as Little Big Town and others sing “You’re Looking At Country.”
7:02 – Carrie Underwood’s gams for Entertainer of the Year!
7:01 – The show starts off with a cold open of hosts Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton singing together.
7:00 – Here we go!
6:56 – Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus just took the podium as the crowd was filing in to accept their Musical Event of the Year trophy for “Old Town Road,” so they are on site.
6:53 – Fiddle Player Jenee Fleenor has won for Musician of the Year. She is the first woman to ever win in the category.
6:52 – So far I am 2 and 0 with my predictions, so I’m feeling lucky. If form holds, Chief will be walking away with Album of the Year, and Carrie Underwood will be ending the night crying pretty.
6:50 – We’ve already had some early winners. Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus walk away with Musical Event of the Year with “Old Town Road,” and Kacey Musgraves won for Video of the Year for “Rainbow.”
6:48 – Some quick housekeeping: Due to the high volume these live blogs regularly receive, certain features of the site will be disabled during the presentation, including the “like” capability on comments. This will be restored as soon as traffic volumes return to normal. Every effort is made to keep the site up, but in the event of an outage (it happens sometimes), we WILL get the site restored. Please be patient. Constantly refreshing in these circumstances can sometimes make matters worse, so instead, wait a minute or two, then refresh to see if service has been restored.

Any chance that Busbee played a factor in the voting for GIRL? He was very beloved in the community.

Might be. Sympathy vote. This was Eric Church’s to lose. Don’t mean to be callous towards busbee. His passing was a tragedy. But that record did not deserve to win.

Well… looks like you are not very timely about updating inputs…. but this is entertainment?? While my last to you is not showing, guess I should not be too surprised.
FYI, was active duty Navy from 1972 through 1992… then back to Federal civilian employment in 2002… have been working as GS civilian for Navy since March 2008… and all of the Veterans that have served this country deserve ALL of the respect and recognition they can get… and Country Music should, of all genres, acknowledge and appreciate them.

Not sure i get where you’re coming from.
Did you join the military just for accolades, & pats on the back?
What about all of the hardworking men and women throughout the U.S., and abroad, in every job?
Please tell me you are not one of those, who wear their military hat into the Cracker Barrel, or wherever, hoping to score a free meal. Or, one of the sorry posers on a Harley, or other bike, with a leather vest proclaiming Vietnam Vet, when they were all of 17 years old, or younger, as we were flying the last Huey, out of Saigon.

I’m so glad I’m not watching this. I thought about watching it for Carrie & Miranda, but it looks like I’m not missing a blessed thing. Especially when Maren wins Album of the Year & there are better albums out there in the mainstream than this. Most award shows are popularity contests anyway. This proves it.

That’s my assessment, too. She has a great voice for R&B, and I think that is where she shines. Even singing lead on “Old Soul” by the Highwomen, she sounded very soulful.

Because it gets old, year after year. They’re trying to stay out of politics obviously. This is coming from a 2 time recent combat veteran. I’d much rather we have occasional focused veteran celebrations instead of the year after year lip service from the NFL and all the large organizations. “oh, we love vets, can’t you tell from our camo hoodies? Now go buy them so we can make more money on your blood, sweat and tears. ”
And stop claiming in all your comments that they’re being “censored”. It’s ridiculous finger pointing for attention. If you think Trigger is censoring comments while desperately keeping his server up and commenting on the awards you’re insane.

Bring back the old style of country, most of these new artists wouldn’t know country if their lives depended on. If this is what country is becoming than no thank you. I’ll stick with the country artists of the 90’s and earlier. Pop will never be country and has no place as far as I’m concerned.

When are they going to play country music? Most of the music so far is lame at best. And a lot of it is R & B, not country. The Underwood/Paisley hosts were the best, this is like a #Me Too convention.

Yep. Isn’t it funny how they got the vocalist awards right, but the “bigger” awards wrong.
Shows you just how industry politics negatively affects Country Music. It’s a shame the genre-as-institution is being held up by the Money-Grubbing Whores of the West Side.

I haven’t watch the CMA in years. I tried to this time because I heard some of our real country artist were going to be on. But , what a mess. These on the awards show are just Nashville puppets. The music is blaring, ( cause they can’t sing ) . No talent at all. I grew up listening to Haggard, Waylon, Cash , Marty Robbins and a lot more. This stuff they call music today is crap. Garth Brooks AGAIN.
For all the lip service the CMAs gave to women tonight, when it came down to it they could not bring themselves to give their highest honor to anyone without a penis.
They had a worthy and deserving female nominee this year. And if they couldn’t stomach giving Carie the award it should have went to Church.
Instead we get Garth Brooks AGAIN.

I was positive this was Carrie’s year. Something else really bothers me though….The first repeat winner of EOTY was a woman (and at the time, only the third woman to win the award at all). That could have easily been a great intro to the award. They didn’t mention Barbara Mandrell once, and she’s one of the genre’s greatest entertainers, male or female. She should have presented EOTY, instead of having Reese Witherspoon promote Apple TV. I was hoping to see clips of past female winners in each category, Each performer could have performed a brief tribute to a female artist, then their own song. Every set of presenters should have included female CMA winners. There’s a lot more that could have been done, and done better. It would have helped if Carrie had won.
Tracy

I was wondering why Barbara wasn’t at least part of the opening. Another big disappointment and oversight for this CMA show.
CeeCeeBee
November 14, 2019 @ 6:03 am
Yeah, that crossed my mind too. They should have at least mentioned Barbara Mandrell, given how much ground she broke for women in country musoc. For that matter, Taylor Swift won EotY twice too, and Shania and the Dixie Chicks won…you’d think they’d at least acknowledged them.

I will never watch another cma wards ceremony agaiy. Carrie underwooy was more deserving than Garth Brooks for entertainer of the year. It is absolutely ridiculous that you give an award to someone that has been out of musiy for so many years and he comedy back and wins an award to him
tucker33585

Neither one were deserving. There are better artists featured on this blog daily, but because of the Nashville establishment they will never be big unless they sign on with someone, or can pull a Jinks

November 13, 2019 @ 9:54 pm
Umm, Pat, how has Garth “been out of music for so many years”? He’s had two albums in recent years, including a #1 single in 2017 and a current single in the top 20 with Blake. Besides, the EOTY has become a touring award, which means that Garth is the obvious, predictable choice. The problem is not Garth but the CMA for making the EOTY award into a numbers game with ticket sales, which apparently is what it has become. Like many SCM readers, we believe that Eric Church is long overdue for this award.

Ditched the awards tonight to go see Midway. I did read your live blog and caught my self up.
Best quote: “Bobby Bones is the greatest DJ in country music. Just ask him.”
I think if Country radio had a cancer it would be named Bobby Bones.
About a week ago while getting a hair cut the lady cutting my hair says “oh you like country music… me too.”
I replied with…
“The Country Music you listen to if about Red solo cups and tailgates. The Country Music I listen to is about the people who work 12 hour shifts making those solo cups and tailgates”.
It opened the door for me to introduce her to Charle Wesley Godwin among others.
I’ve used this quote a few more over the last few weeks in explaining my taste in music. I know it’s not a perfect answer but it’ll do for now.

I think what you’re looking for is the whole show was hollow. They tried to pay tribute to women, but ultimately it fails because tomorrow morning only Miranda, Kelsea, and Maren will be played on the radio. The country radio programmers don’t give a rats ass about the women of country music.

I said this same thing to my husband a few days ago when we saw a commercial for the show. It’s all just a poorly veiled attempt to look politically correct in the Me Too era. That opening of the women all singing together was life-affirming for me and raised me up just because it reminded me of my childhood growing up in the 1990s and hearing many of those wonderful, talented women on the radio on a regular basis and seeing them on CMT. Still, it felt rushed and each woman was not given much time. I think it’s easy to just throw a bunch of women together on stage and let them sing some hits. It’s much harder to actually give women more radio air play, nominate them for awards, support their careers, let them have individual performing slots on the actual award show where they can showcase the full breadth of their talent. This felt like a performative gesture to me, as much as I loved seeing Terri Clark and Martina McBride and all the other great women. More needs to be done. It was nice to see the older women but there are so many young women trying to make it in country, from Maddie and Tae to Ashley McBryde to many others that barely get mentioned, like Caroline Spence, Michaela Anne, Dori Freeman, and so on. Lift those women up, make those women a household name, give them a time to shine in the spotlight. Reba and Dolly and all the others already have a place in country music history. Again, I loved the opening, but it’s not enough. It’s not even close to being enough when men still dominate and women are being shut out. I’m glad that we are finally getting past bro country, but god we can’t even estimate the damage it did and how much ground was lost for women. This show was a start, but more needs to change.

Well Garth Brooks can go f**k that CMA award, celebrating women in county music what a complete load of BS! They could care less, this was just a smoke & mirrors show they figured would keep those waking up to the blatant sexism at bay. Guess they cared more about not being classed racist since they gave Lil Nas X an award. Could have done both – just saying. Carrie should have won in 2016, Eric should have won tonight. But they didn’t cause the CMA voters just cannot bring themselves to give Carrie an award she’s already earned. God what chance has Miranda got. And worst of all Taylor Swift has won it, like WTF! She’s less country than Carrie & she won. What does Carrie have to do shoot fireworks out her ass? If you were going with a man, should have been Eric, all I can hope for is its his year next year. My advice to Carrie is tell the CMAs to get stuffed, you’ve given them so much hosting over the years & this is how they repay you, stuff em, let them find someone else to host next year.

Carrie has won PLENTY of awards! And she is still relatively new to the whole music scene. KEITH URBAN should have won EOTY! If you have ever seen him in concert, you would agree. He is CONSTANTLY putting out new music, he puts on a 3 hour concert, gives 200% at every show, and treats his fan like GOLD! I’ve gone to a LOT of concerts, and I’ve never seen anyone work harder than Keith!

I had mixed feelings about tonight. I thought the opening was fantastic and it was great to see some old favorites back in the mix like Sara Evans, Crystal Gayle, Martina McBride, as well as our amazing hosts. Speaking of hosts, it seemed like after the opening Reba and Carrie were doing all the work hosting. Dolly disappeared for long stretches. The sound was muddled on a lot of performances and it was tough to listen to.
I will say that while I would have loved to hear Reba sing Tammy Wynette Kind of pain, Stronger than the Truth, In His Mind, off her new album. Still though her FANCY performance is proof she still has more stage presence than 99 percent of other performers. No stage production, no band, and she still sounded amazing. She knows how to play to the camera. Speaking of Reba. She can host CMA Christmas, ACM awards, CMA awards, have a Las Vegas Residency, be in a movie with Will Smith, and don’t forget came out with her best country album all in one year and yet she isn’t worth a female vocalist or album of the year nomination. It doesn’t make sense.
Other highlights for me include Blake Shelton God’s Country, Kelsea Ballerini’s Homecoming Queen, and Eric Church’s performance. Weak Moments Dan and Shay, Maren Morris pitchy GIRL, and Kacey Musgraves winning female vocalist. Why is it the weakest vocalist wins female vocalist. It reminds me when Taylor Swift one over Reba, Martina, Miranda, and Carrie. This award should not have vocalist in the title if Taylor and Kacey are allowed to win. If we’re honest we all know they wouldn’t make it past the audition stage on the voice.
Hopefully at the very least some of these female performers we haven’t seen in a while get a boosts in sales tomorrow. Here’s hoping.

Giving unearned awards to Maren Morris just ensures that she’ll never make the sonic shift needed for her to actually put out quality music. This is really disappointing. At this point it’s very obvious that they just arbitrarily hand out these awards.

Every time I tuned in (about 5 or 6 times) whatever was on the screen was either very bad Pop or very meh Country. So I’m not sure what happened with all the hype about returning to traditional Country–you may have expected the CMA to take the wheel and be heading down a Country road, but when I look over from the passenger seat I see a foot stomping the brake pedal, the right blinker on, and the on-ramp sign for Lamestream Country up ahead. I’m never hitching a ride with these fuckers again! Lol
I was glad to see the push to honor Women in Country Music has fully paid off–and in a big, unprecedented way. Congratulations to Jenee Fleenor as the first-ever female CMA winner for Musician of the Year!

Some songs by women are good and some are awful. Some songs by men are good and some are awful. Why can’t we just leave it at that? This hitting us over the head with the plight of women in the country music industry – over and over again – is tiresome. We get it! We’re trying to do better. I like who I like. If its 15 male artists to 9 female artists, that doesn’t somehow equal my trying to keep all women down and not supporting them in the business.

*glad to see Tequila not win – I love that song and wish it was by anyone else but I feel it’s been in the running for awards for too long

This year the CMA show resoundingly told us that Bro Country is dying and being pushed out. It will remain an embarrassing footnote in country music history. But what is alarming is the pop/R&B push. Dan+Shay, Maren Morris, Pink performing her non-country single, Carrie Underwood slinking around in that dumb hat… c’mon. Enough of this crap. Like Kacey said: I love country music. This is a genre worth saving and we’re not out of the woods yet.

Carrie may be a vocalist but in not a good live performer. Seeing her along side Reba and Dolly further points out her inadequacies, she’s very wooden, doesn’t know how to move or even stand. After all her time on stage she appears very uncomfortable.

Y’All are doing it wrong. It aint about the $$$$ and image, CMA has sucked the soul out of country.
Hank, Waylon, JC & company are laughing, listening to Sturgill’s “sound & fury” and telling him..

*Glad Tequila didn’t win – love the song and wish it was by anyone other than Dan & Shay. Feels like it’s been nominated for awards for like 3 years
*Loved seeing Cody Johnson there – even if he didn’t win, nice exposure for the Texas/Red Dirt scene (even if he’s on the pop end of that spectrum)
*Miranda’s performance seemed off – was she sober? on something? Seems that Brothers Osborne took half the song to stand up and the rest of the audience reluctantly followed?

Are there any Nashville insiders on here ? how much of these awards has to do with the actual person and or their team and how they treat people in Nashville? there’s been gossip over the years that Carrie and her team are not nice to deal with and does this have something to do with it? Does seem like she gets snubbed quite a bit !
Tracy
November 14, 2019 @ 8:31 am
I am no insider but I have heard this, too. Brothers Osborne are really well liked and regarded as nice guys and hard workers In Nashville and I think this helped them win the Duo award the previous 3 years. I think it’s funny Miranda Lambert pushed for Carrie to win & Carrie still lost. Maybe Miranda isn’t too well liked either? Nashville is more “small town” than LA or NYC and the country music family is a pretty tight knit circle. Being kind probably does help when your peers are doing the voting.

The CMAs realized that both Eric Chruch and Carrie Underwood deserved the entertainer of the year award. So to make it worst they cancelled each other and gave it to Garth. Garth barely played any shows. How is he the EOTY? And Maren Morris? Both Eric Chruch and Underwood had better albums. Underwood had the number one debut album of the past several years in country. ERIC CHRUCHs album is a masterpiece. Why Maren Morris?

DISCLAIMER : …i did not watch the entire program but took note of the nominees and winners and followed the blog and comments.after the dust settled I was craving some new COUNTRY MUSIC so I listened to reba’s new album ‘ stronger than the truth ‘ and just shook my head .
THIS WAS THE BEST MAINSTREAM COUNTRY ALBUM THIS YEAR and was completely ignored EVEN WHILE THE ARTIST HERSELF HOSTED THE F****** PROGRAM !!!!!!….incredible songwriting and arrangements throughout , reba never sounded more focused , more restrained and sincere , grown up music with grown-up productions ( SUPERB CHARTS AND INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCES ) and completely country .
the fact that this album was ignored says more about this industry than any other act on that awards show and all the ‘female pandering’ they tried to muster .maintream ‘country’ is pop and its rock and its loud and in your face with little to no nuance or concern for REAL country music. its pandering and bro- or- no its still WAYYYY off the rails musically .
when maren morris’ over-the-top-trendy forgettable pop record wins ”country album of the year ” there is something terribly inauthentic and still sadly wrong about this genre’s mainstream presence .
convince me that payola isn’t alive and well in that pop-centric excuse for an industry .

“I’m really surprised Garth did not have more self-awareness”
I’m really surprised you are really surprised about this. There are few people on the planet more disingenuous than Garth Brooks. Surely you haven’t fallen for the half-whisper he uses when he wants to try to express sincerity? It’s like watching a robot access “Sincerity Module 2.73” or something.
Here is some sincerity – FU&$ GARTH!!!!! That chubby clown disappeared once, why won’t he do the world a favor and do it again. He represents all that is bad and evil in the world.
I agree that Keith Urban sucks, but at least he can play a guitar. Name one thing that GARTH!!!!! can do.
Also, for those extolling Reba’s performance/stage presence – really? She moved, if you can call what she did moving, like she was a kid in their first play that was only concerned about hitting their marks. Yes, she sounded great, but please, at least give her a microphone to have something to use as a prop.
Finally, wtf is up with not letting anyone have any time to do anything? The opening could have been really nice had they not tried to stuff 42 women and 28 songs into it. Why give Pink time to sing an entire song? Hasn’t she already had her moment flying around Bridgestone Arena? And speaking of Pink, is there anyone who sells more records/tickets who has a lower profile than she does? I can’t name a single song she sings, nor do I think I want to, yet she sells great. Credit to her for that, I guess.

Reba isn’t running around for a simple reason. She’s on tv. The camera is what she needs to play with and not the people in the crowd. Carrie (who I love) running around stage isn’t stage presence its just energy. Acting out a song is different than just showing energy. It’s the job of a performer in these televised performances to know where the camera is and to play around with it. Being comfortable on stage is not the same thing as taking advantage of being on camera.

I think it seemed awkward because she hasnt. done production in her live shows in over 20 years. She’s dipping her toes in the water again for her new tour coming up. I give it a pass. She’s much older than when she did the reveals in the 90s. It’ll take practice but I think she’ll get there.

Country music is starting to become too political. We are headed in the wrong direction when we promote sin in songs such as Girl Crush. I do feel like Carrie got robbed. If either she or Eric would have won EOTY, I would have been cool with it. I am a fan of Garth’s, and Eric’s, but Carrie should have won. Opry obligations, her fan base, being a positive role model, sales, her touring, it all adds up. I’m thinking the CMAs need to get an Audience award that we all vote on. Or clarify what EOTY is. Or maybe the vote was split between Eric and Carrie, and Garth barely won? It’s weird, definitely. I get that it may not be misogynistic, but it sure feels that way from where I’m sitting. I streamed the CMA’s. Thank God, I could fast forward thru such, out right BORING performances, with, freaking repetitive lyrics, and, NOT even County, ie., Maren (cannot even remember her last name)!!! Album of the Year, SERIOUSLY??? She’s NOT Country, she’s totally R & B (even detected a bit of Rap). Now,. ” CRY PRETTY” had ” Girl” beat all to hell!!!.
And, Garth Brooks, as Entertainer of the Year – are you F-ing KIDDING me??? He’s ‘old as the hills and twice as dusty’, or, should I say, rusty? He slighted Carrie by neglecting to even mention her, in his speech, but, In guess all that Whiskey & beer has fried too many of his brain cells, eh?
I kept wanting it to end, but, kept watching to see Willie Nelson(we have the same Birthday, different years- lol). I felt bad for him, as I could tell he knew this wasn’t his finest hour.
I just hope that next year, all the winners will be deserving!!!
