Eric Church is a Strange, but Smart Pick for Super Bowl Anthem

Over time, the Super Bowl has become just as much of a music event as a sports one with all the festivities leading up to kickoff, the reciting of the National Anthem and “America The Beautiful,” and of course the always boisterous halftime show.
But country music is usually left off the lineup when it comes Super Bowl time. Aside from Shania Twain making a co-headlining appearance during the halftime show in 2003, and a country music extravaganza in 1994 with Clint Black, Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker, and The Judds all appearing, country music has been shut out of the big game in recent memory.
There will be at least a sliver of representation in 2021 though as Eric Church has been tapped to perform the National Anthem with Jazmine Sullivan. It’s a bit strange to pair people up on the performance, but according to the individuals involved, the inventive rendition with be something to pay attention to, and when Church was asked, he couldn’t say no. In a recent interview Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music, Church explained,
“Here’s what I said, I’ve said this forever: I will never ever sing the national anthem. It’s so hard. Except the Super Bowl. And I fully assumed—I mean, I’m not Chris Stapleton—I fully assumed they’re never going to ask me. So, when they asked, I thought ‘shit.’ My first response was no, I can’t… I’m a stylist, not a vocalist. But I heard it, I thought ‘that’s cool, that sounds like me.’ And then I heard [Jazmine Sullivan], and I’m not missing a chance to sing with her. And that was it. Once I heard her voice I said ‘Okay, I’m in.’”
Eric Church is right. He’s a more rock-oriented country star not necessarily known for his pipes, making him a strange pick for the opportunity. But if you want to pair a male country star with a black female artist to signify unity like the Super Bowl is attempting to do here, Eric Church actually becomes one of the few ideal candidates, at least from the country mainstream.
Even though Eric Church is known partly for his bad boy attitude, he’s been the preeminent guy in mainstream country working with black women, and helping to lift their voices. This is what he did in 2013 when he brought out the then virtually-unknown Valerie June to sing “Like Jesus Does” with him in an intimate acoustic performance on the ACM Awards. Later Eric Church paired with Rhiannon Giddens on the anti-racism song “Kill A Word,” which he also performed with Giddens during the 50th Annual CMA Awards in 2016. In fact, Eric Church has been the curious champion of women in country over the years.
This instance is a bit different of course. Jazmine Sullivan is probably just as popular and prominent as Eric Church. But Church knows his way around these kinds of pairings as the less powerful singer—how to not hog the mic or spotlight so to speak, making him well-equipped to handle this assignment. The fact that he’s not a super singer might be what makes him ideal.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Church says of singing the National Anthem, “I’ve avoided it forever. It’s an incredibly hard song to sing … Somebody like me, you take some liberties with it, then you’ve gotten too far away from the melody and suddenly you’re a communist. Honestly, there’s just more to lose than to gain … [But] with what’s going on in America, it feels like an important time for a patriotic moment. An important time for unity. The fact that I’m a Caucasian country singer and she’s an African American R&B singer—I think the country needs that.”
Like Eric Church says, there’s extra scrutiny on whomever performers the National Anthem, especially at the Super Bowl. Time will tell if Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan can rise to the occasion. But as we’ve seen in the past, if they do, it will be remembered for the ages. And though Eric Church may not exactly be the hardcore country crooner some may want in that spot, his participation will be a win for country music nonetheless.

Just off the top of my head – Faith Hill sang the national anthem one year and America the Beautiful another year. Carrie Underwood and The Chicks have also sang the national anthem.
February 6, 2021 @ 11:51 am
Yes, there’s definitely been some country stars sing the National Anthem in years past. Garth Brooks as well. But when you consider country music makes up at least 1/4 of music culture in America, it’s woefully under-represented when it comes to Super Bowl performances, especially halftime shows.
February 6, 2021 @ 12:32 pm
the Super Bowl is a globally televised event, country music just isn’t popular enough when you factor in a worldwide audience..that’s why country artists won’t be getting the halftime show anytime soon
February 6, 2021 @ 11:47 am
Shocked they are even allowing it as Woke as they have become.
February 6, 2021 @ 12:39 pm
They’ll probably have Maren Morris run in with a steel chair or something.
February 8, 2021 @ 9:15 am
I knew there would some kind of catch Ha!
February 8, 2021 @ 10:13 pm
Bawh Gawd that’s Maren’s music!! Make it stahpp!!
February 6, 2021 @ 12:29 pm
Trigger, what are your thoughts on Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones?
February 6, 2021 @ 1:04 pm
Nails on a chalkboard.
I just thought it was kinda lame until the end of the last verse when it got so cringe that I literally groaned.
I do think he’ll do a great job with the National Anthem though.
February 6, 2021 @ 5:59 pm
The song is pleasant enough. I appreciate the idea, even if they couldn’t pull it off lyrically
February 7, 2021 @ 12:09 am
It’s just tough to accept. Knowing what he’s capable of, it just sounds so lazy to me. The bright side is there should be plenty to mine gold from on a triple album.
Can’t help but think the song he sold to Morgan Wallen was better than any of the singles that’s he’s put out ahead of this release.
February 6, 2021 @ 1:18 pm
I took a small sniff at it, but I’ve been trying to recuse myself from his (and others’) pre-release “instand grat” tracks so when I listen to the album, it’s all fresh and cohesive in my mind. I know it’s a triple release, but there’s been too much music ahead of this album.
February 6, 2021 @ 4:36 pm
As a big eric fan, i couldn’t agree more with you more on releasing new songs pre album. When i get the albums, i want it to be fresh and new. Crazyland is the only other one that i listened too other than the radio singles of course, but crazyland is really good
February 6, 2021 @ 1:07 pm
Why hasn’t Garth Brooks ever played the Half-Time show?
Is he the only solo country artist that could receive just a coveted gig?
I can also imagine a half time show billed as “Tim McGraw & Kenny Chesney” being a possibility?
Or why not “Garth with Friends in Low Places” – could be Garth with 12 other country acts doing a medley of hit songs.
February 6, 2021 @ 6:55 pm
I’m not sure the NFL would give him a halftime show after the stunt he pulled at the 1993 Super Bowl when he sang the National Anthem, plus they’re all about the young audience lately with the halftime shows.
February 6, 2021 @ 1:09 pm
But the real question is… Who actually watches football anymore??
The ole pig skin , eh?
It’s all about the game of Curling in my house!
February 6, 2021 @ 9:26 pm
Curling is super underrated. very cool sport
February 6, 2021 @ 1:23 pm
I must be really missing the point. A national anthem is exactly that. A national anthem. It was never meant to be country, rock, hip hop or whatever the current fad is. The number of artists I have heard strangling the anthem at any number of events sporting or otherwise is incredible. I live in Ireland. If our national anthem was to be performed in the manner that American performers have treated their anthem they would be prosecuted. There is but one version of the national anthem. Be proud that you are asked to sing it.
February 6, 2021 @ 2:37 pm
It was in this year of our Lord 2021 that I learned that y’alls anthem is not, in fact, the Fields of Athenry.
February 6, 2021 @ 2:40 pm
Well Cackalack, no answer to that. But at least when it is sung at sporting events it sounds as it should do. Mostly.
February 6, 2021 @ 3:15 pm
If there are things out there that are better than the Dropkick Murphy’s take on Fields of Athenry, I would like to know what they are.
Seriously, let me know, because those would be some really great things.
February 6, 2021 @ 3:27 pm
The Anthem should be sang as written, no interpretation needed.

Have always liked this DJ.
Jamey does it with feeling & respect!
Go Tampa Bay!!!
February 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm
You’re looking pretty good there Di.
February 7, 2021 @ 7:49 pm
Really?
Tampa Bay winning?
Excuse me, going to ck the score
February 7, 2021 @ 7:54 pm
Yay!
Rooting for the Buccs because Tampa/St. Pete, also home.
So …
i do have to ask this one question …
They winning fair & square, no inflategate shenanigans?
Cross my heart, not being a smarta**
February 7, 2021 @ 8:19 pm
: D
Or, deflategate? (knew that didn’t sound right)
You guys are being too nice. You knew i had that wrong
February 7, 2021 @ 8:57 pm
Half a dozen of one, six of the other, or…. 7 in this case.
February 6, 2021 @ 6:09 pm
Garth is yesterday’s news. It’s 2021.
February 6, 2021 @ 7:29 pm
So are you saying that because he is older, or what? A good singer/ good songs are never “old news”. Good music never dies. There are thousands of songs from the past that make today’s music sound like SH**T.
February 6, 2021 @ 8:45 pm
On another note the Opry was awsome tonight. Dierks was great, Parker had his first shot and did great, and Rhonda and the boys hit the ball off the scoreboard!
February 7, 2021 @ 3:18 am
I am not watchful of the NFL as I was before because what they politicized of it of what we suppose to be enjoying amongst friends.I love the National Anthem song what it stands for of this country and proud to be Americans. We have not have a problem in the past and not now of knowing and singing the Anthem. There are those who want to riduculed and demean it as much as they can because what it stands for the freedoms and the pride we have for this country. After all let us not forget about 911 who were as a country and being a American.
February 7, 2021 @ 6:43 pm
Way better than the other SHIT on the Superbowl schedule pregame and halftime show! What’s the deal with the diapers on the heads? I got it they got Shit for brains!
February 7, 2021 @ 8:35 am
I wish they would have asked him to do the halftime show!!
February 7, 2021 @ 8:43 am
Off topic, but Saving Country Music needs to implement a sort of ‘Virtue meter.’ After the whole Morgan Wallen incident this site has clearly indicated it is not interested in simply critiquing artists on the merit of their music, but in large part on the strength of their virtue and the brightest of their signaling it. I expect an a few apology articles on Walker Hayes. Despite his music being pure garbage…he has better virtue than Morgan Wallen. And as Sandman implied in his previous comments, virtue is better than art.
February 7, 2021 @ 8:57 am
First off, no commenter speaks for this site. Commenters speak for themselves, and I’m proud to host a diverse set of opinions here so we can all see topics from different perspectives, which is healthy.
“Virtue” is not the primary thing that matters in music. Though it sure is nice when artists make you proud as opposed to let you down.
February 7, 2021 @ 9:22 am
I stand corrected then. I thought Sandman was a contributor. I do appreciate the open and honest forum to communicate here.
February 7, 2021 @ 3:42 pm
Did I hurt you so much that you need to whine about this on multiple posts? Log off and calm down. Some people have real problems, and this certainly isn’t one of them.
February 7, 2021 @ 9:03 am
It’s interesting that Eric considers himself more a “stylist than a vocalist”. I would argue that his voice has come on leaps and bounds in recent records, and that he is a legitimately good singer these days.
You can pretty much imagine exactly what the Anthem would sound like sung by Stapleton without actually needing to hear it. With Church, i can picture it going a number of ways.
All of which is moot, because I have no interest in watching the Superbowl.
February 7, 2021 @ 10:03 am
As a fan of country music I appreciate, and I think we all should/do, the manner in which a singer takes on a song written, recorded, or performed, perhaps even more famously, by another artist. Is this not the heart of country music? Stardust, anyone?
To push, pull, twist, and attempt to individualize a song, especially the Anthem, while still keeping in the spirit of the original composition is as traditional as steel guitar. Think what you will of Church, but I will reserve judgement til I hear it.
One thing to note about halftime performances; I believe the artist has to pay to perform which essentially makes it more of a marketing move, not necessarily an artistic expression?
February 7, 2021 @ 11:54 am
Having dinner with friends tonight
I sure hope they don’t want to watch the damned Super Bowl.
I have no interest in the NFL and even less interest in the woke commercials that are supposed to be shown during the game.
February 8, 2021 @ 9:24 am
Positive commercials make an grown ass man uncomfortable.
February 7, 2021 @ 2:13 pm
I find it hard to believe that Church would agree to lipsync. I understand that is the NFLs rule.
February 7, 2021 @ 2:18 pm
That was the rule for a while after Garth Brooks left them high and dry one year. But I believe they have moved on from that.
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/garth-brooks-the-super-bowls-lip-sync-legacy/
I’ll be watching for it, though.
February 7, 2021 @ 4:30 pm
They did great job.
February 7, 2021 @ 4:30 pm
Ummmm… that wasn’t half bad.
February 7, 2021 @ 4:35 pm
Thought it was a good rendition. Not sure we’ll remember it years from now. But it was good for right now.
February 7, 2021 @ 6:35 pm
Keith Urban is killing the halftime show too.
February 7, 2021 @ 6:29 pm
His part was fine but not great.
Her part was terrible.
Just sing it straight.
February 7, 2021 @ 6:45 pm
I guess MR Church didn’t catch my, doesn’t need interpreted
February 7, 2021 @ 6:48 pm
Way better than the other SHIT on the Superbowl schedule pregame and halftime show! What’s the deal with the diapers on the heads? I got it they got Shit for brains!
February 7, 2021 @ 9:12 pm
Thought the anthem was great!
But The Weeknd? Sounds more like Wednesday! Amirite?!
February 7, 2021 @ 11:25 pm
Jazmine overshadowed Church and H.E.R. killed it on America the Beautiful but overall, good job on both.
The game itself was somewhat of a disappointment since it was so intensely hyped as the matchup for the ages but Mahomes was off (assuming because of foot injury and recent concussion) and the Chiefs destroyed themselves with penalties.
Still, I love football so my only regret is not betting on the Bucs as instinct told me to. 💖🏈
February 8, 2021 @ 10:25 am
I agree. We couldn’t hear Church during most of the song. He was singing so low. And the tweets were actually funny. Jazmine is such a strong vocalist. Sounded like he was her backup. Enjoyed H.E.R and the weekend as well.Glad Bruce got his first Super Bowl.
February 8, 2021 @ 8:44 am
Eric Church would be a great halftime act.
February 8, 2021 @ 9:09 am
Give the halftime show to Cody Jinks!
February 8, 2021 @ 10:36 am
veryngood performances on the anthem and by h.e.r
bit of a prince feel to h.e.r.
February 9, 2021 @ 5:10 am
I liked it when we could switch over and watch new Beavis and Butthead episodes instead of the bloated half time show.
And I’ll take Jamey Johnson to sing the national anthem. Yeah no chance, but no chance I watched the real thing either.
February 11, 2021 @ 3:20 pm
I rather liked the National Anthem performance – particularly Eric Church’s tasteful guitar licks. I don’t have any EC albums or tracks (probably never will) but I thought the Anthem was pretty well done.
