New Rebel Rouser Podcast & Izzy Zaidman is Back
Well tonight is a pretty big night in podcast land. First I am happy to announce that one of my favorite podcasters, Tim Pop of Tim Pop Live is debuting a spanking new podcast tonight called Rebel Rouser Country. It is going to air weekly on realpunkradio.com, Tuesdays at 7 PM EST.
And for his first show Tim Pop is going to treat us to a Hank Williams tribute, which only seems fitting. Tim Pop has been a big supporter of the Reinstate Hank movement, and though he’s always been a punk podcaster first, he was one of the FIRST to recognize the cross appeal of REAL country music and the punk scene.
Can’t tell you how excited I am about this show.
Also tonight at 10 PM EST Outlaw Radio will have none other that Izzy Zaidman of the new band Izzy and the Kesstronics as a guest.
Izzy is the former lead guitar player for Wayne “The Train” Hancock and played all of the lead guitar on Wayne’s latest album Viper of Melody. He was kicked out of the band in April after an altercation with steel guitar player Tony Locke. Whose fault the fight was depends on who you talk to, but we can all agree that Tony, who was put in the hospital, received the worse end.
Izzy is a wildly talented guitar player without question, and so far what I have heard of the new band is good stuff. But when I interviewed Wayne Hancock in August, he told me Izzy was black balled from the scene. So the big question is, will Izzy’s reputation precede him? We might get some answers tonight, and I have a copy of the album on the way and will be seeing them live myself in a couple of weeks. If Outlaw Radio doesn’t throw him some hard balls, I just might have to.

Reinstate Hank Videos !!!
First of there’s a really cool Reinstate Hank video that came from the event in Cincinnati Judd Films wrote about in this blog.
I was tipped off about this from Reinstate Hank lieutenant Restless in Amsterdam. Check it out:
Man, can you imagine renting a room and being told the piano that comes with it is the one Hank Williams practiced on before recording “Lovesick Blues”? Shitfire.
Also Outlaw Magazine is asking anyone and everyone to submit videos voicing their opinion about Hank Williams not being a member of the Opry that will be uploaded to their website. To read more about it CLICK HERE, and thanks again to Cathy for spearheading the Reinstate Hank affairs through Outlaw Magazine.
AND:
– Tim Pop Live has some new shows up, including another all country show, so you should go check that out.
–Hank III released a few new concert dates in Cali, including 2/27 at the Roxy in LA, and the Grand Ballroom in San Francisco on 2/28. Of course you can always check out the tour section of hank3.com for all tour dates.
Also a quick correction. In my Shooter VS. Shelton blog, I accidentally wrote that Shooter’s “Put the ‘O’ Back in Country” song was a duet with Neil Young. I had duet on the brain I guess because I was talking earlier in the blog about how there was no chance we’d see a duet between Shooter and III. I think what I meant to say at the time was that Neil Young co-wrote the song. But that is false too. “Put the O” was adapted from Neil Young’s “Are you Ready for the Country,” a song Neil wrote on Harvest in 1972 and covered by Waylon in 1976 on an album of that same name. I have to thank Don for pointing that out, and hopefully I can keep my brain farts to a minimum in the future.
I also dug up some very very interesting information involving the whole ‘cunt’ and ‘O’ in country controversy that is so involved I have even finished the research yet, but I will get it into a blog soon so stay tuned.
Horns Up Hellbillies !!!

Hank III with Big G/ TimPop 2.0 / & IBWIP Delivers !

Free Hank III supporter and all around good guy Big ‘G’ of the Texas Roadshow has landed a big fish, as none other than Hank Williams III will be LIVE tonight on Revolution FM, which you can listen to online by clicking that link. The interview will air at midnight CST, and I don’t want to hear any whining that it’s after your bedtime. You ain’t gonna turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight, just pitch a tent under the covers, give NyQuil to your mommy, whatever you got to do just make it happen.
But if you can’t listen tonight, then I’m sure at some point it will be posted on Big ‘G’s podcast where you can also find other cool interviews.

Speaking of hiding under the covers, our beloved Tim Pop is all growns up, and has hit the podcast big time. He has been picked up by punkradiocast.com which is one of the biggest podcast outfits out there. His first show was live on Wednesday 9 PM EST. His shows will continue to be archived at timpoplive.com as well, so if you can’t catch them live, you can always listen or download them later.

And not to drill it into your brain but if you have not checked out It Burns When I Pee Episode 21, you got to get that shit done.
Pound for pound, IBWIP is the best REAL country monthly podcast, and the best-sounding, most professional podcast PERIOD. Great format, great hosts, great commentary, great interviews, and most importantly REAL country music.
Episode 21 was a special one because it included live interviews from the Metal Farm Magazine release party with Keith Neltner and Blake Judd who are the heart and soul of the movement to Reinstate Hank Williams to the Grand Ole Opry.
The thing that I like about IBWIP is that it is a funny podcast and you can tell they have lots of fun putting it together, but when Blake Clayton gets down to interviewing someone, he really takes it seriously. Not that he doesn’t have fun, but he asks good and smart questions and you really come away understanding whoever he interviews better.
For example with Blake Judd and Keith Neltner, after listening to the interviews I really felt like these are good, honest, hard working dudes with good heads on their shoulders and with their hearts in the right place, and it makes me feel great that they are the creative team behind Reinstate Hank. Sometimes this stuff can be hard to translate through MySpace pages or websites.
Blake Clayton and Norma Jean from IBWIP drove all the way from Peoria, IL to Cincinnati to be at the Metal Farm release and do the interviews. That is dedication my friends. Nobody is paying them to do this stuff, they do it because they want to.
And that honesty and true enthusiasm about the music is why REAL country music will never die. Why us, the grass roots, will never go away and never succumb to the moneychangers who have taken over our country music institutions. WE ARE COUNTRY MUSIC. Those people on the pop country stations, they’re impostors. We know it, and they know it. And someday, everyone will know it and pop country’s house of cards will fall.
Believe it.

Halloween with Unknown Hinson

Hank Williams III is not gonna get a tattoo of you on his arm unless you got some skins on the wall.
For Halloween Unknown Hinson is releasing a new live album Live & Undead. It is available at www.unknownhinson.com.
300-Year-Old Vampire & King of Country and Western Troubadors:
Underrated, Amazing Guitar Slinger:
Head Sqidbilly:
Speaking of scary, check out this slaughter of an old country great perpetrated by none other than Everlast:
The Hank III Coalition has a great blog about this. I first heard about it on Tim Pop, whose brand new band Switchblade Justice plays their first gig tonight in DeeTroit at the Belmont.
Man, this is an abomination of the highest order.
I’d rather find a turd in a taffy wrapper than to watch that.
I’d rather watch a werewolf take a dump on the face of my dead grandfather.
Happy Halloween.

One Big Goddamn Hellbilly Family
On IBWIP, they interviewed Rachel Brooke who is good friends with Tim Pop, they mentioned a comment I left in passing on their MySpace site, the Hank III Coalition won their contest.
They also announced that they will be doing their show next month from the Metal Farm Magazine release party in Cincinnati.
Then I read this amazing blog from Cathy, and it hit me.
Man this thing is big, and getting bigger.
And it may not include millions of people, but the people who are in it are in heart and soul.
And the whole thing is bookended with Hank Sr. & Hank III. When Hank Sr. got kicked out of the Opry, that’s when it all started. That’s when money became the most important power broker in Nashville. Waylon Jennings and the original Outlaws proved that, and Waymore made light of it in his song ‘Are you Sure Hank Done It This Way?’ Then Shelton comes along, and right out of the gate declares he’s an Outlaw, and even better sees with GREAT WISDOM what is going on in Nashville, where the lines need to be drawn and the battle needs to be fought.
I don’t know that this post is going anywhere, except to say that this Big Hellbilly Family is as strong as it ever was, and is growing. I can feel it. And I feel humbled to be a part of it in any small way.
freehank3.org
Partly spurned by soul-inspiring weekend, and partly by circumstances, partly by MySpace screwing up my last two blogs, I am working on completely revamping freehank3.org. There are no noticeable changes at this moment, but when I’m done with it, it’s going to be a place where people who are not on MySpace can not just be informed, but also participate. It will also hopefully DRAMATICALLY increase the exposure this movement has all over the internet.
It will also make this blog much more accessible to people, and make it easier to find information in blogs. I’m not leaving MySpace don’t worry, but there are lots of people out there that think MySpace is full of fags and whorebots, and don’t want anything to do with it, and I want those people to be able to participate too.
It might be a couple of days or a couple of weeks before it’s done, it just depends on how much time I got to throw at it, and how many pinche problemos come up. I let you know when it’s live.
Other Stuff:
You can go to neltnercreative.com now and see some of the art that is going to be displayed at the Metal Farm release party in Cinci. God dammit I wish I could go, but it’d cost me four figures to get there.
You should also check out RustyJames. He’s got a really cool song up called ‘Hank I, II, & III.’

More Imposters/ Vinyl/ Podcasts/Boobs/Olympics/ Whatever
Wasn’t planning to post a blog today but there’s a bunch of random shit to talk about, so here we go.
First off sorry to everyone who tried to leave comments or kudos on my blog yesterday and got an error message. Stupid MySpace.
Another Hank III Impostor
If you go here you can see there’s yet another Hank III impostor. I don’t know if these dudes get off on this or what, but man does it bring my piss to a boil. He even put “me” under a picture of Hank III. Is this dude sick? Shit just be yourself. Again to report these bastards you go all the way down to the bottom of the page and click “report abuse.”
The problem is that MySpace will probably not take it down unless Hank III contacts MySpace himself, and then he’s got to take a picture of himself holding a photo ID or some bullshit, it’s this huge process. The way we got the last site taken down was through copyright infringement, because they had Shelton’s music on it illegally.
But still, it can’t hurt to report his ass, and maybe the sheer volume will make MySpace see the light.
Damn Right, Rebel Proud to be Released on Vinyl !!!
Yep, if you want to kick it old school, there will be a number of DRRP albums pressed in vinyl, and it will also include with it the CD. For more info on this you can read the release on HANK III.com where you can also get all Hank III OFFICIAL news.
I don’t think this will be something you can order online, but I’m not sure. You might have to go to your local record store and convince Pimples the Wonder Boy how to figure out how to special order it for you. But I think it’s kick ass they’re doing this and I’m definitely getting a copy.
Podcasts Podcasts !!!
Tim Pop Live has just release his 100th show, and there is a rumor that the head hellbilly of freehank3.org MIGHT make an audio appearance. So you should check that out, and you should also check out his last show which was an all country show if you haven’t yet.
It Burns When I Pee has just released their latest podcast featuring the women of underground country. It’s got an interview with the lovely Rachel Brooke, and great music so you should check it out. If you want a preview of the show, or to learn more about some of the female artists it features, you can check out my Ode to the Hellbetties blog.
I’ll be listening to these podcasts and might have some reviews up for you later.
Also, I always mention the podcasters, but we also can’t forget the traditional radio people who support Hank III like Revolution FM down in Texas and Big ‘G’s Roadshow.
Boobs & the Olympics
Let me just say that I like boobs. Big boobs, small boobs, real boobs, fake boobs. I’m a fan of ‘em all.
I just wanted to say that clear up some misunderstandings that might’ve arisen from my Ode to the Hellbetties blog. If you thought that I was implying that I do not like boobs, and thus, may not be as much of a man as you thought I was before, that was not what I was trying to say. Nor was I targeting fake boobs as being bad.
I simply was trying to make the point that pop country today is all pretty faces and no substance. It used to be that if country singers were easy on the eyes, that was a bonus. But now if you aren’t hot by the bland standards of Nashville, then you can’t make it in country music.
And pop country singers don’t write their own songs any more. That’s what the “ugly” people do behind the scenes, while the “pretty” people get all the fame and money lip sincing what others write.
Sound familiar?

This is what’s happening in music all over the world, and it must be stopped.

Free Hank III News Roundup Vol. 3
So this is another installment of news that is important, but no specific topic is big enough to support a whole blog, so here we go:
Bob Wayne’s Working Man:

(Bob Wayne with Hank III’s famous Guild)
If you’ve browsed my comments section lately, you might’ve seen that I got confirmation that Bob Wayne is indeed the writer of the ‘Working Man’ track, which was one of the new tracks added to Hank III’s Damn Right, Rebel Proud .
For those of you that don’t know, Bob Wayne is (or was) Hank III’s guitar tech, and is also a former opening act for Hank III. His band, the Outlaw Carnies, which always has a revolving lineup, has also featured Joe Buck and III’s flat picker Andy Gibson.
AND he’s gonna be rolling through my neck of the fruited plane here in a couple of weeks, and I hope to have a concert review/interview for you here when that happens. I’ve never seen him live, and from what I hear he puts on a hell of a show, so I’m looking forward to it.
Joe Buck Fall Tour in Live Swing:
Speaking of damn good live shows, Joe Buck has got a helluva Fall tour schedule being put together so go and check his site out.
Does this mean no Hank III live shows till next year? Not really sure. There’s still the possibility Joe Buck could cancel shows for a Hank III tour, or that he could use another bass player. But something tells me its just going to be a while until the next Hank III tour. I’ll keep you posted. You can also read my previous blog about Hank III touring HERE .
Podcasts, Podcasts!!!
Every time I start talking about podcasts I feel like I’m whipping everyone’s ass and getting preachy. But really if you’d rather drink dihreea out of a buffalo’s dick than listen to pop country radio, podcasting is one of the ways to go.
Tim Pop has got a new show up if you like old school punk with a little country mixed in.
It Burns When I Pee also has a new episode up.
This episode IBWIP has an interview with Jayke Orvis of the .357 String Band. They even got this poster out there done by Keith Neltner to promote the show:

I always have trouble finding their podcast because their site is under construction, but if you’re looking for it, do NOT go through their MySpace site or IBWIP.com. The easiest way to get to their podcast is to go to Hank in Chains and The Bootleg Asylum Radio Show .
IBWIP are big supporters of REAL country music, so go CHECK THAT SHIT OUT!

October is a Long Way Away (+new site to check out)
I know a lot of you are still miffed even though we finally got a release date for Damn Right, Rebel Proud simply because Curb Records has been jacking Shelton around for so long, and I know even more of you are miffed that we got to wait four months for it.
Listen, all I got to say is that I’m pissed too, but you just can’t release an album through a major label overnight. This shit takes time. And something that might’ve pushed the project back a little was when they added the new tracks, ‘Three Shades of Black’ & ‘Working Man.’ And hell, I don’t blame Shelton for trying to cram as many tracks on this album as he can, because you never know when the next one is coming out.
If Curb Records does anything to help promote Damn Right I’ll eat my hat, but it looks like on this album Hank III ain’t gonna wait for Curb and he’s going to do his own promotion. But to do this you have to space things out on the calendar properly, not considering actually making the CD’s and getting them to the stores.
For example this was the last and only music video ever made for a III song, off of his first album:
So III this time said fuck it, if Curb isn’t making any music videos, I’ll do it my derned self. That’s where the ‘Mud as Fuck’ shoot came in, and the video for ‘Long Hauls and Close Calls’ is being made from that footage.
By the way, rumor is the ‘Long Hauls’ video is coming out September 30th. In my personal opinion, that song is the best one Shelton has ever written, and since it contains no cussin’, it could be a break out radio hit if they can just figure out what format to play it in.
But if you’re itching for the new III and are pissed off it’s going to take so long, all I can say is that I feel your pain, but pretty much there’s nothing we can do. I’d hate to push for it to come out sooner, and then the production or distribution or promotion is poor on Curb’s end.
But if you’re itching to get your listen on, here’s some stuff you can check out:
–The proverbial house organ of freehank3.org, Tim Pop Live has a new show up. There’s also a spanking new podcast called Punk & Beans Radio . There’s only one episode up, but what I’ve heard so far they play Hank III and a lot of the old school country stuff.
Another cool thing to check out is and to fill your Hank III jones is THIS SITE . Click on “Hank III’s Wild Ride” and then you can arrange video and watch them in your own order and all this stuff. This site is SICK!
Another thing we can do to make sure that Damn Right makes it out on October 21st is to pre-order it online through Amazon or whoever, or through a local music store once it is available. If there are enough orders, this kind of obligates Curb to put the CD out, and also labels will sometimes judge the promotion they will put behind an album or even how many albums they’ll make by the amount of pre-order sales, so this is another way we can help Shelton out. I’ll keep an eye out and let you know when and where you can pre-order online.

Free Hank III News Roundup Vol. 2
New Tim Pop Country Podcast
TIM POP LIVE has a new all country podcast out you should check out. Music from Hank III, Bob Wayne, and old school stuff from Waylon, the GREAT Wanda Jackson, and Bob Wills. Great intro too. If you haven’t checked him out yet, Tim Pop has been a big supporter of Free Hank III and even in his non-country shows he’s got great old school punk and rock he plays. Stuff you already like, and stuff you’ve never heard that you will. You can add him on MySpace HERE .
Hank III at Curb Records
If you missed this from my last blog, The Texas DJ of the Year JB Cloud called Curb Records and left this comment on the blog:
“Just talked to my buddy up there – Guess what? Hank III is in the building having a meeting right now. Oh, and when I called my buddy – he was in a meeting with the GM. I told him that I’d call him back but also asked him to send me a copy of the CD AND get it in the stores soon.”
So as all of you were calling, which I still discourage and hope that you DO NOT continue to do, at (615) 321-5080, HANK III WAS AT CURB! I’m hoping something got hashed out at that meeting, but so far I haven’t heard anything.
JB Cloud is just one of the many DJ’s, like Big ‘G’ and Miss Holley who play Hank III’s music and support what we are doing. The DJ’s are just as miffed as the fans, because they want the new Hank III to play.
And if you’ve ever wondered if Curb Records knows about us, I have previously received confirmation that Curb people HAVE been to freehank3.org and have read these blogs. Also when Walt the Terror called Curb the other day, the operator asked him if there was some kind of movement going on because they had been receiving so many calls. So yes, Curb knows were out here, and that we will not go away quietly.
T-Shirts? Bumper Stickers? Etc. ?
I had some people ask my why we don’t put some Free Hank III T shirts and other merch together, or maybe try to get some billboards put up. Don’t worry, that’s been on my mind since day 1 of this thing. I already have T shirt and sticker designs done, have talked to manufacturers and stuff. I’m just waiting to pull the trigger. Thing is, this stuff costs $$$, and though I’ve seemed to be able to justify carving out 20+ hours of my week to work on this shit pro bono, to take money out of my pocket is a little harder to stomach.
I would’ve already made some merch, but the thing is that it truly does seem that we are getting close to resolving this thing. Hank III was at Curb on Thursday meeting about something. Something tells me the whole reason for the delay in the new Hank III tour might have something to do with III needing to be around to take care of the legal stuff, or that they think they can get Damn Right, Rebel Proud released soon, BEFORE they launch a new tour.
But if it turns out that we are in for a long haul or there is some major setback, shit yeah we will make some merch, and since I don’t want to make a dollar off this thing, we’ll take the proceeds and use it to put up billboards or do whatever else we can to get Curb’s attention that costs $$$. I just don’t want to make a bunch of T shirts and then have Shelton tell me to chill the whole thing out because they finally got the whole contract thing resolved.
Also understand that at this point, Curb might want to walk away from the contract too. Hank III and Curb might just be fighting about how best to do that.
I’ll keep you posted.

If You Can’t Help Your Own . . . (plus new video)
The title of this blog is the name of the sixth track of Damn Right, Rebel Proud , still waiting to be released by Curb Records.
Truth is I’m a little pissed right now, and I’m sorry this shit is so long, but that’s the way it is.
Just like everyone else I’m eager for the new tour dates to come out and the tour to start, but SOME people are crossing a line that I’m not comfortable with. This is one comment I pulled off the Hank III MySpace site:
“Cancelled Again??? WHAT THE FUCK!!! This is twice now I’ve bought tickets and the show has cancelled. Do you really expect people to buy tickets in advance anymore after this shit? Who’s your fuckin manager? Are you shitheads in REHAB? Maybe you should buy a fuckin ice cream truck and quit the music biz!”
I’ve seen similar sentiments in other comments and on the Hank III message board, and I’m sure people are sending him messages like this directly.
Now I’ll be the first to tell you, I am frustrated too how the whole tour thing has been handled. In fact my ass was thrown under the bus for posting dates before they were ‘official,’ even though the way I confirmed all my dates was to make sure tickets were for sale. Are tickets not ‘official?’ I don’t know how this was my fault and not III’s booking manager’s. I also don’t know why III hasn’t ever been on Conan or Letterman or Leno or Austin City Limits or any of those places. I myself have open questions about the dudes III’s got in charge of promoting him.
BUT DON’T SPEW YOUR FUCKING VENOM AT III !!
You really want him to quit the music business? That’s the same thing Curb Records wants him to do, AND THAT’S WHERE YOU NEED TO SPEW YOUR VENOM !
Because if you can’t take care of your own . . .
Listen, I don’t know Hank III personally, but I know that the dude is a workaholic. There probably ain’t nobody itching more to see III back out on the road than III. And he may not be a perfectionist, but he wants to make sure the shit is right, and like the ‘official’ word from the Hank III camp said, they’re working in a new drummer.
Maybe the tour dates will come out tomorrow. Maybe the whole band quit and he’s having to find all new people. Maybe they finally got the album through the courts and they’re waiting to go on tour once it’s released. I really don’t fucking know and a little part of me thinks its none of our business. All I can say without knowing the exact reason is that I know its a good one.
And I know Hank III needs out help, not our hate.
In Tim Pop’s last podcast, he talked about how Straight to Hell could’ve been a groundbreaking album in music history if it was promoted right by Curb, and I agree with him. This is not because it was some super special country album. It was great, but the greatest thing about it was that he was showing punks & metalheads what country IS SUPPOSED TO BE!
Straight to Hell was the first major label country album to carry an explicit lyrics label. Think about that. But aside from the music, I think that one of the reasons Hank III made that album was because he’d been rebuked by the country music establishment. So he was going back to his punk metal roots, where he knew he had friends. And the last thing I want to see is those friends and fans turn on his ass.
The reason I don’t just write stuff only about Hank III here, but also about other artists, old and new, is because if REAL country music, or all underground music, is ever going to survive is if we all join forces. Think of it as a revival or a gathering of tribes. And the kind of shit some people are saying only helps to divide us.
SO IF YOU CAN’T HELP YOUR OWN, SHUT THE FUCK UP !!!
I’ve also seen some people asking what the problem is with the new album, which is the reason we all need to redouble out efforts in getting the word out about that.
I’ve said enough.
If you have not seen this video yet, it is an EXCELLENT interview with Hank III. The chick doing the interview wants to get in his pants so bad she can taste it, but she actually does a real good job, which I can’t say about most of the people who’ve interviewed him. But in this he talks about looking for a new drummer, the situation involving the album, the fact that he’s a workaholic, how he’s looking for people to ‘help him out’ (which is what inspired me to start this thing,) and other great stuff.
Hank III interviewed in Atlanta / Stonecold TV
..
This is also a BRAND NEW video posted on Hank III’s Official YouTube Page . Check it out:
I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that III’s ‘Status’ has switched to ‘single.’ Hehe.

Podcasting & Hellraising (some reviews & light reading)
If you have found your way to this dark corner of the internet, then you probably hate how homogenized radio has become. And if you were asked what you would like to hear on the radio, you would probably say you wanted to hear the great old stuff from Hank Sr. and Johnny Cash, as well as the new stuff from people like Hank III, Rachel Brooke, and Those Poor Bastards.
Well my friends, bit your quitchen and get your ass over to timpoplive.com. He has put an ALL COUNTRY show together just for your redneck ass, featuring the previously mentioned people as well as GG Allin (no bullshit) Jimmy Martin, Steve Earle, and others. He also mentions the FREE HANK III Movement!
Tim Pop’s podcast this week is all country, but he and other podcasters are putting out good podcasts every week and every day. You can download them too, and fill your iPod up with them for listening in the car and on road trips.
Check out that last two episodes too when you’re over there (87 & 88) where he also mentions Free Hank III and our onslaught on Curb Records.
Tim Pop is not paying me off people, I really like his podcast. He even mentioned how the Nashville Playboy Eddy Arnold died this week, and plays a great Arnold song covered by Johnny Cash. How many pop country DJ’s do you think even know who Eddy Arnold is?
The Outlaw Country Album You Must Have:
Another way you can get your birds flippin’ at the Clear Channel pop country consortium is to buy those albums, and I’ve got a good vintage one for you that might be off of your radar.
When you hear of ‘Outlaw Country’ a lot of people think of Willie, Waylon, & Coe, but when Willie & Waylon told Nashville to fuck off and went back to Texas, there were already a few people down in Austin making the music scene something worth being a part of. One of those people was Jerry Jeff Walker .
Walker’s career started out more like folk and moonlighted more like Rock & Roll, but in the early to mid 70′s he was as much of an Outlaw Country musician as anybody. Jerry Jeff had already had a big hit with Mr. Bojangles , but by that time he was tired of the song and virtually refused to play it.
Along with people like Michael Martin Murphy and Townes van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker made the Austin, Texas Outlaw scene, and with his 1973 album !Viva Terlingua! he put a small town just south of Austin called Luchenbach, TX on the map.
!Viva Terlingua! was actually recorded in a remote studio in the parking lot of Hondo Crouch’s bar in Luchenbach, and on a couple of tracks, they bring the band inside to the awaiting party to record.
Some of the tracks on the album are weak throw-ins. But the first track ‘Gettin’ By’ is a classic, along with the two live tracks ‘Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother,’ and ‘London Homesick Blues’ with the live audience of Luckenbach singing along. It also features songs from Gary P. Nunn & Ray Wylie Hubbard, both stars in their own right. Other strong tracks are ‘Desperadoes Waiting for the Train,’ ‘Wheel,’ and Michael Murphy’s ‘Backslider’s Wine.’
If you consider yourself an Outlaw Country fan, then you need to own this very good but little known album, if not just for ‘Redneck Mother,’ one of the greatest Outlaw Country anthems.
And its up against the wall redneck mother
Mother who has raised a son so well
He’s 34, and drinking in a honky tonk.
Kickin’ hippies asses and raising hell.
–Ray Wylie Hubbard.
